I. News and Announcements


• Get a sneak peak of the new broadcast studio (photo right) which is about to officially open in the Integrative Learning Studio.

• If you are a student in Journalism 301 or in an upper-level writing course (Sports Journalism, Reporting for Radio & Podcasting, Community Journalism, Broadcast News Reporting, Writing About Pop Culture, Magazine Writing, Broadcast Performance, Broadcast News Reporting II, Diaries, Memoirs & Journals) please help the Journalism Department assess Journ 300 by taking this short survey. We want your feedback about this class as we move forward. Thank you!

• At noon today, Dec. 1, the Journalism Department will be serving pizza to all majors in the ILC Hub, courtesy of Prof. Maddy Blais.

• Interested in being the 2015 Student Commencement Speaker? If so, submit a two-page, double-spaced copy of a speech to Stephanie Subocz of the Student Speaker Selection Committee by 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015.

II. Advising Information


• The Fall '14 grades will be posted on SPIRE by Friday, Dec. 26.

• If you do not plan to attend UMass for the Spring '15 semester, you need to submit a withdrawal form to the Registrar's Office. 

• If you took your last minor courses during Fall '14, bring a minor declaration form to your minor advisor.

• If you are planning to do an independent study during Spring '15, be advised that the Journalism Department has changed its IS policy and form.

• You can now enroll for online courses offered during Spring '15. Journalism is offering five courses: Journ 300: Newswriting and Reporting, Journ 333: Introduction to Digital Photojournalism, Journ 335: Principles of Public Relations, Journ 445: Journalism and Law, Journ 497E: Health Journalism. These classes are not covered by tuition and cost extra. They do count toward your normal, on-the-ground Journalism major.

• Matt Rocheleau and Eric Bosco's ('15) article, "UMass Amherst cuts ties with Bill Cosby," was published on the front page of The Boston Globe last Wednesday.

IV. Alumni and Faculty News


• Kevin Koczwara ('09) got a byline in The New York Times with a piece titled "Squandering Two Leads, Red Bulls Are Ousted."

• Caroline Moss ('09) also got a byline in The New York Times with "A Pre-Thanksgiving Ritual: Cocktails, Catch-Ups and Maybe a Kiss."

• The Columbia Journalism Review's News Literacy department just published a piece on Ferguson and used Prof. Steve Fox's News Literacy class as a hook.
