Pet Do's and Don'ts for the Holidays!
The holiday season is upon us! It is a time for gathering with family and friends, Christmas trees, and who can forget the yummy food? The holidays can also be a busy and hectic time for us all and we might not remember all of the do's and don'ts for our four legged companions this holiday season. Have no fear Thomas' Tails is here with a quick list of tips to keep tails a waggin' and cats a purrin' with these tips for a safe and healthy time to be had by all!
Don'ts:
Don't give Fido or Fluffy fat trimmings- they can cause tummies to become not so jolly, and that's no fun for anyone! Always avoid any kind of chocolate treat. Your pet might like the taste of it but chocolate can be detrimental to a cat or dogs health. All plates of food should not be left within in reach of a pet. Make sure Christmas trees and decorations are secure and out of reach to four-legged eating machines. Trees should always be secure- cats might enjoy climbing up them or dogs might knock into them and they should be secure enough that they do not fall over. Tinsel and garland is a kitty wonder and little teeth like to chomp and swallow them. This should be avoided as that can cause severe digestive upset and vomiting. Holly, Mistletoe, and a variety of Lillie's can cause some unhappy and dangerous side effects for your pets so keep them out of reach.
Do's:
Do give Fido a healthy treat alternative to table food such as Raw bones that can be purchased at Thomas' Tails, chicken necks, or even some canned pumpkin. As always, be sure to supervise your pet with any treat. If you are having a holiday gathering give your pet a safe space to retreat to should the crowd become to much for your cat or dog to handle. Choose a pet- friendly bouquet to display such as, Orchids, Violets, or Roses. Give pets an interactive toy to keep them busy during the hustle and bustle of unwrapping gifts so that they do not eat any ribbon or wrapping paper.

How to have a Healthy Horse for a Happy Winter!
During the winter season pastures become rapidly depleted of natural forage and horses must increasingly rely on their owners to provide them with a nutritionally adequate diet. To properly feed a horse during the winter months several key factors must be addressed:
Water should always be the first consideration in the diet of any horse. Without adequate water intake horses can not survive. An adult horse (1000 lbs) in a cool, comfortable environment that is not working or lactating requires a minimum of 7-10 gallons of fresh, clean water a day.
Fiber is the next factor to take into consideration. It is recommended that horses receive a minimum of 1.5% of their body weight in dry forage per day. For a 1000 lb horse that equals 15 lbs of hay per day. Adequate fiber from hay is even more critical during winter months since it is the feed ingredient that keeps horses warm during cold weather. Digestion and fermentation of fiber (hay) produces heat that helps the horse maintain its' body temperature. The best way to keep a horse warm during winter is to provide plenty of good quality hay!
