You'll complete two miniature leather books, each with the leather, thread, and decorative paper options of your choosing. These little books can also preserve meaningful holiday messages to be remembered each year. In addition to the books made in class, you'll learn two types of bindings that can be used at home with simple materials to create more ornaments or larger notebooks. The Skillery, 1323 Sixth Avenue North, Nashville
$45 (includes all materials)
Learn to bind a handmade book in one afternoon. You'll walk away with a book of your own design and the skills to make more books. We'll make books bound with the French link stitch. This style allows the crisscross stitching pattern to be visible on the spine of the book, a great way to show off your handiwork. In addition to completing one book, you'll learn a type of binding that's easy to replicate at home with simple materials and few tools. With your know-how, you'll create awe-inspiring books that could make for meaningful holiday gifts. Handmade books also have many practical uses, such as sketchbooks, planners, guest books, and travel journals. This class is appropriate for all skill levels. All tools and materials included.

Intermediate Book Arts:
Guided Independent Study
Thursdays, February 5 – 26; 6 – 9 p.m.
Watkins College of Art, Design & Film, Nashville
$105, plus $25 materials fee
Bind the handmade book of your dreams, with a little help from a book arts pro. This four-week class allows you to pursue a bookbinding project of your choice, and builds in time for you to develop the idea with input from classmates and instructor Katie Gonzalez. You’ll receive guidance as to which binding style and materials would be most fitting. It could be a blank travel journal or sketchbook, a hardcover book meant to be filled for a meaningful life event, or an expressive and sculptural work of art. Come prepared the first week for guided brainstorming. We’ll turn those ideas into sketches and mockups before you create your special book. Some bookbinding experience required.

Learn to bind a soft-cover leather book that can be used as a journal, a sketchbook, or a photo album. Using the Italian Longstitch style, a binding that dates to 14th Century Europe, each student will create a book with a leather cover that features exposed decorative stitching on its spine, and pages that lay flat when open. Students will use leather for the book cover and have the option to include interesting papers inside. You’ll leave this class with a completed handmade book, and the skills and resources to continue binding at home. No previous bookbinding experience required.
