3 cups of water water
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/4 of salt
honey or light brown sugar
1/4 cup milk
Put rice, water, cinnamon, and salt in a medium size pot, cover and bring to a boil. Leave the lid on and turn it down to simmer on the stove for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Check the texture and decide if it needs more water. Add the brown sugar to taste and the milk. Let it simmer very gently for 10 more minutes or until it has reached a nice soft texture.

Things to Know and Do at CWS

Wintergarden is almost here!

Wintergarden is a festival celebrated in Waldorf Schools around the world. It is a meaningful event rich in beauty and symbolism. At a time of year when the reflective qualities of the holidays can easily be lost, this quiet festival brings a moment of peace into our lives. Each child will take a turn walking through the evergreen spiral to receive the gift of light from an angel who is waiting at the center. This spiral of evergreens takes on the symbolic form of the everlasting, the eternal, the universe and all it contains. Along the spiral, objects have been placed which represent the four kingdoms: the mineral, the plant, the animal and the human being. The candle holder, which each child carries, is symbolic of one's struggle, and the candle placed inside the holder represents the light in each of us. The child walks to the center, the candle is lit, and a spot is chosen on which to place their light ... the child finds his or her place in the world. Gradually the spiral is illuminated as each child adds a lighted candle. Together, the candles bring a glorious light to this darkest season.

Of course, no discussion of this symbolism takes place with the children. Each child is free to experience inwardly what she or he may, and take this with them from the event. We ask for everyone's cooperation in preserving the mood of quiet, reverence and wonder for us all, but especially for the children.

Our school will celebrate Wintergarden on Thursday and Friday, December 18 & 19.

This is a wonderful opportunity for CWS alumni and graduates! We are also seeking Musicians to play simple background music while the children walk the spiral. Piano, strings, harp and acoustic guitar are especially nice. If you or someone close to you are available to assist as either an Angel or Musician, please contact Christine Masur at 513-541-0220 extension 203 or via email at cmasur@cinciwaldorf.org.  Thank you for your consideration.

Please support our Children's Campaign

Thank you to everyone who has given to the Children’s Campaign!  We are at $20,500 toward our $55,000 goal, with 4 weeks to go! Remember, a very generous donor will make a $10,000 match when we hit $50,000. So let’s get there!

Please, make a one-time donation or monthly pledge at our website HERE. Or mail or bring a check to the main office, Cincinnati Waldorf School, 6743 Chestnut Street, Cincinnati, OH 45227. Please write “Children’s Campaign” on your check’s memo line. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by IRS code.

Don’t forget, the Children’s Campaign…

Covers school costs beyond tuition
Advances our Waldorf School
Makes us a stronger community
Puts high quality material in our children’s hands
Allows more students to attend
Is crucial to our financial strength
Gives support for maintenance—think heat and a/c
Needs your contribution!

Winter Strings Concert Reminders

Just a friendly reminder that the 4th-8th grade Winter Concert is on Friday, Dec 12 at 11 AM and 6 PM. Please bring all instruments (except bass) and music to school on Thursday (regardless of class schedule). Violins, violas and music should be brought to the gym according to class; bass, cello and music go to the "gnome" room across from the gym. They will remain overnight for tuning.

For the evening performance on Friday, students should arrive at 5:45 and wear black bottoms with a white top, and put on a red concert T-shirt when they arrive. Students should warm up on their instrument or sit with their class when they arrive.

I appreciate the effort to be at school for evening events, especially during the busy holiday season. Several children have additional performances later in the evening, so we hope to start promptly at 6. Traffic can be very heavy at that time, so please plan travel time accordingly, or consider enjoying Mariemont in the time between school and concert.

Please email me and your class teacher by this Friday 12/5 if your child will be unable to make this required performance.

CWS Personnel Updates

CWS has some new additions to our staff and we ask you to welcome them!

Laurie Burnham has been hired as a new grade school assistant and works with our students on Thursdays and Fridays.  Laurie has been an arts educator for over 15 years, has her own freelance art studio, Forest Fire Studios, where she paints wall murals and create steel sculpture for private homes and businesses and for the last few years has had the chance to work as a Tree Climbing group instructor, leading climbs for scouting troops, sports teams, school and YMCA groups and family gatherings. Laurie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Miami University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University.

Kirsten Roberts, current CWS parent of Ethan in grade 6, has been hired by our Board of Trustees to work on development projects and to help us recruit our next Development Director. Please look for important communication from Kirsten regarding our Children's Campaign and other ways our community can support the important work of development in our school.

Susie MacDonell, current CWS parent of Lucia in grade 5 and Elena in grade 2, has been hired as a new grade school assistant and will work with our students on Wednesdays. Susie has vast experience as an educator and earned her BS and Montessori Society Certification from Xavier University.

In addition to welcoming these new staff members, we must also take the time to say goodbye to an important staff member who has given our community so much of her time and talents. Teri Heist will be stepping down as our Meshewa Coordinator at the end of December. Teri has been instrumental in leading our school's efforts to build new programming at Meshewa and in creating a warm, welcoming and safe environment for our community to enjoy the magic of the land. Please join our staff in thanking Teri for her efforts and contributions in making Meshewa so successful.

Lastly, as we have communicated in the past, Jim Olson has taken this year off to spend time with his family. We are pleased to announce that Jim will be returning to CWS next year as our upper grades math teacher. It will be so great to have Jim back on campus! Please continue to keep Jim and his family in your positive thoughts.

Please contact Christine Masur or Lori Kran if you have any questions about these announcements. Thank you.

Warm Hearth Guild seeking volunteers!

The Warm Hearth Guild continues to provide students and faculty with a delicious and healthy meal option every Friday made by some amazing volunteers! But they could use a few more cooks in the kitchen, so please consider spending a little bit of your time volunteering to help keep this program going strong.  You can sign up here:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4ba9a82ea1f94-school or contact Kirana if you have any questions at bedirao@gmail.com. January menus and payments are due this coming Monday, December 8th.

Help us spruce up our community room!

Our school will be hosting a very big Waldorf conference this coming March and we are working hard to spruce up our campus so we can proudly show it off to all our visiting Waldorf teachers and administrators from around the region. One area we hope to focus on is our community room.  We are open to suggestions of elements our parents wish to include in our community room. Please let us know what you think about the community room space: Does it have the right types of furniture in it? What could make it more comfortable and inviting? How can we keep it more organized and functional for all the ways our parents use the space?

Please send your suggestions to Christine Masur at cmasur@cinciwaldorf.org. If you want to help us spruce up the space, please let us know! Thank you.

CWS Handbook Highlight

New CWS policy on pets:

At CWS we love animals and appreciate how much you love your pets. However sometimes pets - especially dogs - leave messes, sometimes children are frightened or allergic and sometimes dogs do not like other dogs. For the safety and comfort of students, staff, parents and other campus visitors, please do not bring your dogs or other pets on campus during school hours and during special school events held outside of school hours. If you must bring your pet to pick up or drop off your student, please keep your pet in your vehicle or another safe location off of campus grounds. Thank you for your willingness to ensure our community’s comfort and safety. We appreciate it.

Thanks from Eurythmy Spring Valley

A gracious thanks to all for participating in the Eurythmy Workshop last month. Your willingness to support our maiden voyage of this pedagogical workshop is what helped us to launch it this fall. Sea-Anna may have already asked if anyone could write up their experiences from the workshop and send it to us. Having some recollections would be great help in spreading the word that we are offering this kind of workshop to schools. Please send a short remark to Beth Dunn Fox at bdeury@aol.com.
Many Thanks!!!

Don't forget those used printer cartridge donations!

CWS gets free office supplies when you bring in your used printer/toner cartridges. We really appreciate your help in this small, but important, matter. Just bring them in to the office and we'll take care of the recycling!

What Our Classes Are Doing Now

Woodland Preschool ~ We will be starting a new winter circle this week and will also be starting to work on a holiday gift for the children's families.
Sweet Pea Preschool ~ Sweet Pea class is enjoying the fall leaves. We have harvested our last bit of kale and put our garden to bed for the winter. We are also making sure the birds have plenty of food as the cold weather settles in.
Oak Tree K ~ The Oak Tree Children are getting into the holiday spirit by creating winter gardens. We will have a party on the last day of school before winter break where all the families are invited to watch the children walk the winter spiral garden and then partake of some holiday treats with our children. Also don't forget St. Nicholas Day which we are celebrating on the 5th of December. Those new to our community need to know to leave a gift from St. Nicholas for the good deeds the children have done throughout the year. St. Nicholas is not Santa Claus. He represents more the spirit of giving so needed in this day and age.
Rose Blossom K ~ We are making gnomes (see photo above)!
Grade One ~
We are finishing our language arts block and starting a Nature Stories block. We have also begun singing Wintergarden songs.
Grade Two ~ This month we will be working in a math block, focusing on learning to tell time and keep track of time with the months and days of the week. We will also practice the four math processes every day and will begin doing more math problems vertically rather than horizontally. We will also be working on memorizing our play.
Grade Three ~ We will be building our own shelters in the woods and learning about shelters from around the world. We will also work on individual shelter projects. The third grade "museum" will be on Wednesday, December 17 during main lesson - all are welcome to come see our shelters!
Grade Four ~ Zoology Block
Grade Five ~ History Block
Grade Six ~ Grade six students are studying European Geography. We've been playing a game with our globes and maps that helps students identify countries and capitals, oceans, mountain ranges, and rivers: they are quite adept. In December we'll be gazing up at the heavens for our Astronomy block.

Grade Seven ~ We are now focusing our energy and attention on creative writing, often referred to as "wish, wonder and surprise." We will work with both poetry and prose as we write, and read aloud our own work, as well as that of other authors.
Grade Eight ~ We are wrapping up the study of Revolutions. We will then move on to Meteorology. We will also be singing with Adam Petersen frequently in preparation for our eighth grade play.

Why Waldorf?

In one word, SPACE.

One of my favorite quotes is, "Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom." (Viktor E. Frankl)

As the "new kids," my daughters have been at Waldorf for a few [months]. In that short time, the thing I notice most is what happens when you give children space. Space to play, to move, to imagine, to explore, to consider. In that space, they are finding out who they truly are. Much gratitude to the community at Waldorf who holds that space sacred.

Mail to look forward to?!

In addition to being a parent of a Waldorf preschooler, Jennifer Lanski is also an artist. (Perhaps you know her family from seeing them bike to school in nearly all weather conditions, or maybe you've seen her drawing on location in Mariemont or Fairfax.)
Jennifer has an ongoing project that you may be interested in, called subscriptionART. Twice a month subscribers receive postcard-sized prints created from original drawings, delivered through the mail. (CWS was even featured in one!) If you subscribe, the subscriptionART project can bring joy and anticipation to your mailbox too. Subscriptions start at just $20 for 4 months.
