Know your Knots - How to do an Eye Splice

1) Unlay the end of the 3 strand rope and form an eye in an anticlockwise direction

2) Tuck the middle (top) loose strand under the nearest strand on the standing part of the rope, against the lay of the rope

3) Turn the rope and tuck the second loose strand under the next stand in the standing part of the rope - against the lay.

4)Turn the rope again and tuck the final loose strand under the strand in the standing part, between the first two tucks
Complete steps 2 - 4 another 4 or 5 times and then trim the ends

Words from Ben

I can’t believe that it is that time of the year already, seems like we just pulled the Christmas tree down, you can’t tell at the shops though, it seems that they stock Christmas things all year now!
Now is the time to get your boats ready for the holiday break, check your battery levels, book in for an engine service and take advantage of our First Day Free on the hardstand up until Xmas.
We would like to also offer another Christmas Special for the month of December – for all our valued marina patrons we would like to offer 5c per litre discount on fuel purchases – no shopper docket required :)
Merry Christmas and Safe Boating

A Day On The Water

Marina Staff and Friends were treated to a day on the Coal Tugs recently down at Dalrymple Bay
Just stepping on to a 100ft modern tug is awesome enough, until the skipper and engineer start explaining a few stats, like the several thousand horsepower, the Rolls Royce azimuth drive system, the computerised everything. From the air conditioned wheel house,  the goliath’s caterpillars are just a subtle throb. Everything’s happening smoothly and quietly, with the lightest touch, even though it’s blowing 20kts. The panoramic glass enclosing the bridge is awash with heavy sea spray - massive wipers sweep away the blur. The tug’s brutal blunt bow punches into the sea, levelling it. We’re invincible!
Then you nudge up to a coal ship and suddenly you’re  small. The  massive tow lines resemble cotton threads as they reel out across the water and up through the panamas on the ship’s gunwale.  Tug skipper Wade, keeps the tug exactly where it’s needed with subtle wrist actions. It’s like nothing’s happening until you look out the back.  Giant propellers have converted the sea all around the boat to fizz. The tug basically hovers on water. The ship’s pilot requests a snig this way or that. The giant  fully laden ship slips away from the berth effortlessly. Well, two tugs with a combined 11,000hp isn’t exactly effortless,  but we were certainly comfortable!
When I grow up, I want to drive a Tug! - Story By Kim Griffiths, Mackay Marina Real Estate.

Galley Cooking - Christmas Camembert

Ingredients

  • 1 small Camembert or Brie cheese
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • 1 clove of garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of sliced almonds 1 tablespoon of dried sweetened cranberries or red pepper jelly (optional)
  • Crackers

You can easily vary this recipe by using some different combinations of additional ingredients. Here we recommend using dried sweetened cranberries, you can try whatever you have at hand.
1) Melt butter on medium-low heat in a small frying pan.
2) Add garlic and sliced almonds.
3) Add Camembert or Brie cheese and heat gently, turning cheese over once or twice until heated through, about 5 or 6 minutes. Watch that the garlic and almonds don’t burn.
4) At serving time the cheese should be warm and slightly softened, not runny.
5) Transfer heated cheese to a plate.
6) Top with garlic, almonds and butter from the frying pan.
7) Garnish with dried sweetened cranberries or a dollop of red pepper jelly for color.
Serve with a selection of crackers
