The Southeast Sustainability Directors Network collaborates to accelerate the adoption of econmically viable, socially equitable, and environmentally responsible best practices in American Southeastern communities. We do this by sharing information and problem solving together. SSDN is a project of the Chalice Oak Foundation.

Annual Meeting in Review

Members enjoyed an annual meeting packed with good content and time with each other.  There are two great ways to continue connecting with your southern peers throughout 2015:

1.) Make sure you’re signed up to access the member website.  Send Maggie and Natalie a note to set up an account. By doing this you are also agreeing to the website privacy statement ""I won't share private information without the author's consent."

2.) Sign up for a work group that interests you:

  • Social equity in residential energy efficiency efforts
  • Community engagement lessons learned
  • Local food
  • Establishing buy-in from city/county staff
  • Residential energy efficiency and outreach
  • Utility bill management, software, and energy policy

Calls will be scheduled in January to scope work group activities.

 Job Opportunity

Ever thought of moving to Asheville, North Carolina? Maggie Ullman’s old job at the city is now posted, and you can view it here.

 Funding Application Updates

The next Partners for Places RFP will come out around December 5.  Proposals will be due 6 weeks later. We suggest that you begin conversations now with funders about potential common interests so by the time the RFP comes out, you will be ready to craft a joint proposal. You can view the latest RFP here

Let Julia Parzen know if you need help getting started or if you have questions along the way.   For more information on Partners for Places, please visit the Funders’ Network website.

Potential Collaboration Opportunity

Chelsea Albucher shared that on November 17th EPA signed a MOU with Georgia College and State University (GC). The MOU is an agreement to participate in the EPA College/Underserved Community Partnership Program (CUPP) and build a cooperative working relationship in areas of mutual interest. Read more here

Chelsea Albucher

Sustainability Officer
Sunrise, Florida

Chelsea’s life work is mitigating human impacts on the environment. She became interested in the field when friends lived near an above ground subway and dealt with noise pollution. From then on, she has strived to make the world around her better: from working with juvenile delinquents and community gardens, to helping the United Nations with women’s rights issues, to improving recycling in South America, Chelsea has been a force on the move.

She spent 10 years in New York with the EPA, first as a Brownfields Project Manager, where she was a liaison to municipal and county grantees.  She offered technical assistance on site identification, investigation, reuse planning, and remediation. She facilitated a federal and state Brownfields Inter-Agency Work Group. From there, she naturally branched into environmental job training, developing career track training programs for people from non-traditional educational backgrounds. Chelsea also acted as an Environmental Justice contactor for EPA’s regional Superfund program.

Chelsea started in local government with the City of Newark, New Jersey, where her background in Brownfields was a huge asset. She was able to revise lighting standards and help the traditionally rural city transition to a sustainable urban setting as they developed their landscape. She provided sustainable development consulting for non-profits, local government, and private clients.  Additionally, Chelsea was an adjunct faculty member at Pratt, teaching a Sustainable Brownfields Redevelopment course in the Environmental Systems Management graduate program.

In May of 2014, Chelsea went to Sunrise, Florida: the second most visited tourist destination in Florida and home to both the nation’s largest outlet mall and the fourth largest corporate park. She has already received an approved budget to develop a sustainability plan, and naturally driving and parking are first on her list of issues to address. With acres of surface parking, Chelsea has plans to revise the code to accommodate more sustainable methods.

Her goal is to use demonstration projects to integrate and institutionalize sustainability into the city’s policies, procurement, protocols, and programs. She has an eye towards community business challenges, energy service performance contracting, and water reuse.

Chelsea is active in both SSDN and USDN, and eager to share with and learn from her peers.
