Three Years High and Rising
View this email in your browser
In November 2011, the dream of a Black-led, multi-issue organizing body in Central Brooklyn became a reality when BMC's first two staff members came on board full time. Now, three years later and six staff members deep, BMC is churning out campaigns focused on public education food sovereignty, street harassment, citizen journalism, and police accountability. And the hits keep comin’:
Leaders in the Struggle for Police Accountability
Almost three years after joining a groundbreaking campaign to change community policing culture in New York City, BMC became an official voting member of Communities United for Police Reform (CPR). Since joining, BMC celebrated CPR’s unveiling of the Right to Know Act, a common sense
NYC Council legislative package that would protect New Yorkers against unlawful searches and require NYPD officers to identify themselves to the public.
How Central Brooklyn Eats
From July through October of this year, Central Brooklyn Food Co-op member-leaders hit the streets to document their neighbors’ food shopping practices and attitudes. In all, approximately 350 surveys were collected using an on-line survey and an in-person survey distributed through more than 20 outreach sessions.
A few insights:
  • As a whole, Central Brooklynites were satisfied with the store hours and shopping environment offered in their primary grocery stores.
  • Conversely, they were unsatisfied with their primary grocery stores’ product prices and the lack of “ethnic and cultural” foods.
  • Eighty-two percent of those surveyed said they would join and participate in a food coop in Central Brooklyn.
