In 2013 ArtsCenter Stage was cited for Special Achievement in the Humanities by Indy Week for its 2013-14 season. Byron Woods stated that ArtsCenter Stage “took a programming risk, slating a season of theatrical works to commemorate the Civil War sesquicentennial through three different perspectives.”

We're building on this momentum with an even more ambitious season. Our 2014-15 season started with a Four-Star (IndyWeek) World Premiere of Into the Breach and we're following that success with a back-by-popular-demand holiday production of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 presented December 5-14.

All is Calm was first presented at The ArtsCenter in December 2012 as a Southeast Premiere. Robert McDowell from Triangle Arts and Entertainment wrote the production ‘stirs the soul,’ Roy Dicks from the News and Observer stated that All is Calm ‘deserves to be an annual classic’ while Byron Woods at Indy Week wrote ‘this muscular musical reminds us that a set of songs once stopped a war.’ Patrons were equally impressed asking for the production to return as an annual event. One patron stated All is Calm was “Probably the most moving and meaningful holiday performance I have attended EVER”.

All is Calm tells the story of Christmas Eve 1914 when thousands of German and English soldiers put down their guns and left their trenches to meet their enemies in No Man’s Land. They exchanged gifts of tobacco, rum and chocolates, even photographs of loved ones. They sang songs, buried each other’s dead and played a game of soccer.

All is Calm, a concert-style play, combines the a capella singing of trench songs, patriotic tunes, and Christmas carols along with text taken from letters, journals, war documents, poetry, grave stone inscriptions and even an old radio broadcast. All is Calm commemorates an extraordinary moment in history where the words ‘Peace on Earth’ are reinvested with their true meaning.

All is Calm features the Musical Direction of Sue Klausmeyer and the Cantari Men's Ensemble: Dale Bailey, Robert Bruce, Eric Dashman, Adam Dengler, Scott Goodwin, Jeremy Jennings, Darin Knapp, John Paul Middlesworth, David Ray, Michael Shannon, and Dave Sroka.

Production Team: Hope Alexander (Dialect Coach), David Berberian (Technical Director), James Carnahan (Set Design), Elizabeth Droessler (Lighting Design), Marissa Erickson (Costume Design), Sue Klausmeyer (Musical Director), McKenzie Millican (Stage Manager), Jeri Lynn Schulke (Director / Producer), Miyuki Su (Scenic Painter)
