My First Kidney Transplant

"I've learned along the way that sometimes you have to take a leap of faith. That is never easy to do; just imagine how much harder it is when you have to take a whole family along with you.

In 1958, when fifteen-year-old Moira Johnson was admitted to my care, her life was in jeopardy; she was comatose, having seizures and suffering from kidney failure in its terminal stage. Back then, her prognosis was very poor. Dialysis was considered an extraordinary treatment and kidney transplantation was very much experimental. But there was hope. Moira had an identical twin sister, Nola who was willing to donate a healthy kidney..."

Research Priorities of People with Kidney Disease

Because people with kidney disease and those who care for them live with their kidney disease and its treatment every day, it is important to understand what their research priorities are. In a new online survey, researchers from the University of Calgary are inviting them to identify questions (about diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and anything else) that should be studied through research to help improve the treatment and quality of life of people with kidney disease.

For more information on this survey, visit www.kidney.ca/surveys.
