President's Update

A True Watershed Moment by Dr. Robert L. Knight

Florida is the nation’s “Water State.” Surrounded by estuaries and oceans on three sides, receiving an average of about 150 billion gallons each day from rainfall, and underlain by trillions of gallons of fresh groundwater, Florida’s image is synonymous with H2O.

Water in lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands and springs. Water reflecting the sunshine along endless sandy beaches. Water, clean and pure.

Amendment 1, proposed and promoted by the Florida Water and Land Legacy Initiative, received more than 700,000 citizen petitions to reach the November ballot and then won the approval of 75 percent of Florida’s voters. Environmental issues consistently achieve high public approval in the Water State. It is no surprise that Floridians know what is important for their futures — a healthy and protected environment is the bedrock of Florida’s economy and quality of life. Above all else, the most important ingredient for our state’s environmental health is a plentiful supply of pure water. [read more...]

FSI Director Recognized with Water Stewardship and Spirit of Gainesville Awards

On Wednesday, November 19th, FSI's Executive Director, Dr. Bob Knight, was recognized by the Downtown Gainesville Rotary Club for his career as a springs advocate at the club's first-ever Water Stewardship Awards. Other award recipients included The Springs Eternal Project, the Friends of Glen Springs, and the Gainesville Sun/Ocala-Star Banner for the papers' Fragile Springs collaboration.

Just a few days later, Dr. Knight was honored with the 2014 Spirit of Gainesville Award in Education. During his acceptance speech, Dr. Knight reminded the audience that  there is still much more work to be done for our springs, but our environment has 75% of the electorate on its side. To read Gainesville Magazine's special feature on Dr. Knight, please click here.

FSI would like to congratulate all award recipients and extend a heartfelt thank you on behalf of Dr. Knight to the community for selecting him to receive these great honors!

Thank You KBAM Volunteers!

FSI would like to thank all of the volunteers, who braved the cold weather and helped us construct and deploy 16 additional hyacinth cages at the site of our Kings Bay Restoration Project on November 19th! This important work is made possible by all of you!

Special thanks to the Kings Bay Springs Alliance, Save the Manatee, Satchel's Pizza, and Stetson University for their continued support.

Keep a lookout for additional volunteer opportunities on this project in 2015.

#GivingTuesday is Tomorrow!

Join the Florida Springs Institute on Tuesday, December 2nd for a day of charitable giving benefitting nonprofit organizations across the world. #GivingTuesday will take place online over multiple social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, and Razoo.

During this event, FSI's goal is to raise $10,000 for the purchase of a water quality data sonde. This important piece of equipment has the ability to measure dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, and turbidity (cloudiness) in water and is used to monitor water quality in our springs over time.

If you or someone you know would like to make a year-end donation to FSI's #GivingTuesday campaign, please visit our fundraising website. PayPal is providing a 1% match for all donations made through our Razoo fundraising site on December 2nd!
