UNEP's participation at EU Green Week 2013

Tackling the Post-2015 development agenda and the sustainable development goals (SDGs) is a massive global challenge. This EU Green Week, UNEP co-organised a session to help kick-start the debate following the report of the UN Secretary-General's High Level Panel (HLP) released on May 30th. Plenty of questions are left in the SDG and Post-2015 discussions. The panel also covered lessons from the MDGs, the structural issues in developing global goals, the universality of SDGs, how to construct the subsequent targets and indicators. > Read more & watch panelist interviews

UNEP presented the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) at Green Week and its work to catalyse fast action to reduce short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs), such as black carbon and methane. Such reductions have the potential to prevent a significant proportion of the estimated 6 million deaths annually from air-pollution related disease, avoid annual crop losses of over 30 million tons annually, and slow near-term global warming by up to 0.5⁰ C (2010-2050).  > Read more

Achieving resource efficiency and decoupling in pursuit of climate mitigation and alleviation of air pollution was the focus of the International Resource Panel’s (IRP) session. The Panel presented findings from two IRP studies: “low carbon technologies for electricity production, environmental benefits, risks and trade-offs,” and “environmental risks and challenges of anthropogenic metals flows and cycles.” > Read more

UNEP on food security: an ecosystems approach

"The future of food security on the current trajectory is a road to nowhere"

UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner explains the importance of an ecosystems approach to make agriculture more efficient, more sustainable, and to create more intelligent markets. “The future of food security on the current trajectory is a road to nowhere, and to repeat the statistics that we need to grow 50-70% more food without answering the questions, on what land, with which water and with what kind of seed diversity, is a discussion that merits much greater attention.” > Read the full article and watch an extract of the interview
