Your Voice Matters!

Dear members and friends of HFFI,

You may have noticed a new addition to our email communication recently.  We’ve added our HFFI Preservation Alerts as a way of keeping you informed and up-to-date on key preservation issues currently affecting our community. (See June Alerts here)

Every month, in City Council Chambers, decisions are being made with important implications for the future of our city and its downtown historic district.  Your attendance and comments at Architectural Review Board, Planning Commission, and City Council meetings help demonstrate to our appointed and elected officials the things we value most and the sort of community we want to be.  Your voice can help!

We look forward to seeing you in City Hall Council Chambers for these meetings.  Do you have thoughts about a particular preservation issue or a specific project like the proposed One Hanover condo development?  Tonight (Wednesday) the Planning Commission will make a decision on their Special Exception Application, why not come out and let the local government know how you feel!

Details on the meetings, locations and speaking guidelines can be found here.

July First Friday Open House

On Friday, July 5th, HFFI will open the doors of the Lewis Store to the community for our First Friday Open House.  This month we are doing something completely different, and will be featuring a collection of images from photographer Julie Desiderio.  Her beautiful and evocative photos of Fredericksburg will inspire a new appreciation for our historic city and its many hidden charms.

Doors will be open from 6:00 - 8:00 pm; light snacks and beverages will be served.  Photographs will be available for purchase and Ms. Desiderio will be present for questions and discussion.

Vintage Route 1 Event

Preparations for the Vintage Route 1 Tour and Downtown Community Day are under way!  The date for this year’s event is Saturday, September 7, 2013.  The festivities will be held in downtown Fredericksburg, primarily in Riverfront Park and at the Masonic Lodge on Princess Anne Street.

The Vintage Route 1 Event is a celebration of Fredericksburg’s 20th century history.  In 1927, a newly paved section of this historic roadway, stretching from Washington to Richmond, brought travelers right down Princess Anne Street, forever changing the landscape of downtown Fredericksburg,.  Come join us at the Vintage Route 1 Event to learn about and experience the people, places, and events that make Fredericksburg’s 20th century past so historic.

This year the Streetcar Tour will focus on Lafayette Boulevard, highlighting the corridor’s evolution through time and some of the landmarks and neighborhoods that still embody and reveal that history today.  The popular Vintage Fashion show will be back again, featuring the wares of some of downtown’s finest clothing retailers.  More tours and activities are also in the works, so be sure to keep an eye on our website and Facebook page for the latest information.

Need a Route 1 warm up to get in the mood?  Come to the Family Diner (2100 Princess Anne Street) on August 24th for our Annual Car Hop!  Good food, classic cars, and more hula-hoops than you ever thought you would see in one place!

Would you like to help out with the Vintage Route 1 Event?  Or perhaps you have a story or photograph to share?  If so please contact Emily Taggart Schricker at route1@hffi.org.
