Debbie Alexander, formerly an adjunct faculty member at SWU’s North Augusta education center, was named assistant superintendent for Richmond County School District in the Augusta area. She has been serving as principal of Westside High School.

SWU helps Habitat


SWU's North Augusta education center is partnering with Augusta's Habitat for Humanity to help raise funds for the Women Build Project. Applicants to the North Augusta campus who bring in a donation for Habitat will get their application fee waived. Call 803-426-7981 for a list of donation items and more details.

Free Jazz this week

 
In June the weather is hot, but with three free concerts featuring cool jazz, musical refreshment isn’t far away. Concerts will be June 19, 7 p.m. at Folger Fine Arts Auditorium on the Central campus, June 20, 6:30 p.m. at the Main Street Deli in downtown Central and June 22, 11 a.m. at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the Central campus. Jazz camp is tuning up for a great week! If you're on the Central campus, please give the campers a SWU welcome when you see them!

Personnel News

Our deans and provost are pleased to introduce you to the following new faculty: 

Jean Wan has been hired as assistant professor of chemistry. Professor Wan is completing her Ph.D. in Chemistry Education at Clemson and she holds undergraduate degrees in finance and chemistry from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and her MS in analytical chemistry from North Carolina State. Most recently she had been teaching chemistry at Marion Military Institute in Alabama.

Lewis Knight has been appointed as assistant professor of media communication. Professor Knight is completing his doctorate at University of Texas-Austin and holds a BA in radio, TV and film communications (Rowan University in N.J.) and an MA in mass communication (Texas State University). He has had an extensive career in media (TV, radio, and web production) and formed his own company, Knight Line Productions. He is relocating to the upstate from San Marcos, Tex.

Tim Kirk has joined our humanities division as assistant professor of English. Professor Kirk is completing his Ph.D. in literature and criticism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He received his BA in English from Missouri State and his MA in English from the University of Dallas.  Most recently Professor Kirk taught at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla.

Clay Bolton is new to our social sciences division as assistant professor of recreation and leisure studies. Dr. Bolton received his Ed.D. in higher education administration from Mississippi State University, his MS in sport management from Georgia Southern and his BA in political science from Augusta State. While Dr. Bolton has taught at a number of higher ed institutions, he has also held administrative positions in student affairs at University of South Carolina and manages a real estate development and brokerage company.

Jennifer Wagner is the newest member of our education faculty and has been appointed as assistant professor of special education. Professor Wagner is completing her doctorate in special education from Clemson. She received her BA in secondary education (social sciences) from Clemson, an MA in administration and supervision from Furman, and an M.Ed. in special education (learning disabilities) from Clemson. Professor Wagner has been a teacher and administrator in the Greenville County School District and most recently served as interim director/research associate for ClemsonLIFE and as a researcher for various projects/initiatives related to child development.

Kelli Horne is making the transition from adjunct to fulltime faculty as assistant professor of accounting. She is completing her DBA in accounting from Nova Southeastern and received her BS in accounting from Brenau University (GA) and her MBA in management from Strayer. Professor Horne has extensive real-world accounting experience, having worked for a number of Upstate companies.

We continue to bring you news of new staff joining our community through July and August:

Krysten (Hrynda) Loudermilk starts July 1 in the new position of grants and scholarships coordinator in the financial aid office. She received her BA in history/secondary education from Clemson but she also attended SWU briefly before that. She most recently was employed as billing and insurance manager/marketing coordinator at a local chiropractic office.

Katherine (Schleifer) Pelfrey, a SWU alum (2010), returns to join our library staff as a part-time reference librarian (July 1).  Pelfrey earned her BA in English from SWU and completed her master’s in library and information science (MLS) from University of South Carolina. She most recently worked as a reference librarian at Clemson.

Timothy “TJ” Budd joins our athletic department as sports information director (July 15). TJ is completing his MS in sports administration from Liberty University and received his BA in media communication (performance) from Asbury University. TJ has significant experience in the sports information field and most recently held this position at Asbury before accepting the position at SWU.

Shannon Brooks has accepted the position of assistant director of library services (August 1). Shannon holds her MLS from South Carolina, an MS in personnel services and BA in history from Bob Jones University. She most recently served as archivist and digital collection librarian at BJU.

Condolences


Bill W. Crowe, a 1974 graduate, passed away May 3 after courageously battling a brain tumor for 15 months. He was instructor of music and directed Gadsden State Community College Choir. While at Central Wesleyan College, he was a member of the college choir and the traveling group Variation Seven.

Jessie R. Freeman Manley, a 2001 and 2004 Columbia business graduate, passed away May 20. Manley was a 39-year employee of SCANA Corp and was actively involved in several community organizations and her church, North Star Christian Center. She was also a 30 year cancer survivor.

If you’ve been thinking about how great a deal this one year free Sam’s Club membership deal is, it’s time to act now and complete your membership application. This offer expires June 26. The new Easley Sam’s Club has reached out to SWU to offer this opportunity to our employees. This membership offer is valued at $45 and is available to new members or you may extend your current membership. The Easley store opens on June 27. There are a few of ways that you can take advantage of this offer: 

1. Print out and complete the application and:
  • Return to Dana Frost in Human Resources by campus mail or scan it and send it by email (for faculty or staff off campus for the summer, just email me the information requested on the application); or
  • Return the completed application to the Sam’s Club Membership Center in Easley (located on Hwy 123 across from the Kmart shopping center, where New Generation skate shop used to be located).
  • Current members will receive a one-year extension. Email Dana Frost (dfrost@swu.edu) your membership card number and your name as it appears on the card.

Your membership cards (for new members) will be delivered to the campus and they will be distributed by campus mail or USPS (for regional center staff). New cards will not be issued for existing members.

2. Take the free membership cards distributed by campus mail to the Easley Membership Center to redeem for a membership card.

Holiday Schedule


SWU employees will enjoy an extended Independence Day break in July. All university offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 4 and 5.
