NOAA Harmful Algal Bloom Forecast
 
After an accurate prediction last year, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration’s National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) once again issued a seasonal harmful algal bloom (HAB) forecast for Lake Erie at an all-day press event at Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory.
 
 
 
       
       
  Stone Lab's New Water Quality Lab
The newest addition to Stone Lab’s facilities is an Algae & Water Quality Lab, housed in the Research Building. The facility will offer a wide range of analysis services, adding significantly to Stone Lab's research offerings, especially in the area of harmful algal blooms.
  Clean Marina Training Course Updated
The online Clean Marina Classroom has been updated with certification standards for marinas in Ohio and the Great Lakes region. New features include regional best management practices; updated state and federal laws; and more photographs and examples.
  16th Annual Stone Lab Open House
The Friends of Stone Lab (FOSL) Open House will give curious visitors the change to learn about the Lake Erie science that takes place at the Lab, take a peek inside Cooke Castle, or peer down from Perry’s Lookout. The Lab will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, September 7.
 
 
 
Ready for an Invasion
 
Two hundred years ago, British soldiers and their Native American allies attacked Ohio by land and sea. Officials are hoping for an even bigger invasion of unarmed tourists, as celebrations of Ohio’s role in the War of 1812 heat up during the next few weeks.
 
Lake Erie Outdoor Writers Workshop
 
Science and outdoor writers and reporters are invited to this year’s Lake Erie Outdoor Writers Workshop at Stone Lab. The free two-day event, held August 26-27, will allow writers to better understand critical issues facing Lake Erie, such as harmful algal blooms, invasive species, and the lake’s outlook for the future.
 
Ohio Senate Bill Could Curb Algae
 
A bill introduced to the Ohio Senate in June would allow the Ohio Department of Agriculture to train and certify farmers in the correct application of fertilizer, a major source of nutrients that can fuel harmful algal blooms in Lake Erie.
