8) West Kent Elementary School 50th Anniversary

West Kent Elementary School will celebrate its 50th year on June 14 at its present site on Viceroy Ave, Charlottetown.  Jennifer MacEachern and Val Beer began working on the celebration plans 2 years ago. A West Kent 50th blog was created to keep parents and alumni informed of our ongoing planning. Students and alumni contributed to a 50th West Kent Anthology.

Through an ArtsSmarts Grant, Everett Johnston, a stained glass artist, co-created two window murals representing what the students like about the school. On completion of the project, the children felt a sense of ownership, pride and celebration.  The school held a design contest for students to create a logo for our 50th celebration. Tracey Evison organized a clothing sale sporting the school logo. Music teacher Susan Duncan composed a song for this event and her choir will sing it at the celebration event. Linda Iris looked through school photos covering a 50-year time span, which she put into photo albums.

The West Kent 50th Celebration takes place June 14 at West Kent Elementary School from 1:30-3:30 pm. There will be a slide show showing the process of the children used to co-create the stained glass mural, photos, books and memorabilia on display.
