New CUSA ID Numbers

You may have noticed while reviewing your roster on BonziTeam, that your players ID numbers have changed. This is the next step in combining all 3 Senior Soccer Leagues into one database. The end result will be each player having only 1 ID number and Bonzi Login regardless of which league they are participating in. Below are some frequently asked questions and answers that have been coming to the CUSA office.
  • Which number to I put on the Game Sheet? The ID number on the game sheet should match the ID number on the player's card. This is to ensure the referees do not question the players identity when the number on the ID card and the number on the game sheet dont match up. CUSA has access to each players historical ID number and can find players in the database by using either their new ID or their old one
  • Will everyone on my team need to get a new ID card? Yes, but not right now. CUSA is currently coming up with a strategy to issue the new player cards to the teams all at once, rather than have players and managers come to the office individually. We are anticipating the roll out of new cards to happen in the Indoor 2013-14 season, as teams are localized to 3 game locations.
Everyone's current CUSA ID card and the number on it are still valid and no player will be penalized for having a different ID number on their player card from what the team manager sees online. All roster members are still expected to have the proper team or club name on their player card as usual.

Artificial Turf

Artificial Turf is designed so play does not need to be cnacelled due to rainy weather. The only reason a game would be cancelled on artificial turf would be because of lightning in the area, or heavy snowfall. Artificial Turf fields are designed with drainage pipes under the turf so water is quickly removed.

It is important all CUSA members respect the 6 Artificial Turf fields that we hold permits on each and every week. The following items can lead to the damage of the turf, resulting in field closure
  • Spilled sports drinks - Please stick to water inside your water bottles when playing on AT.
  • Sunflower seed shells/ any food - This is not grass with dirt underneath, anything left on the field will stay there instead of being decomposed.
  • Smoking - ashes and cigarettes buds can cause burning of the AT as well as the rubber underneath.
Failure to respect the AT will result in CUSA losing our permits on those fields. If you have any questions regarding artificial turf, please contact the office.

Calgary Soccer Centre

As of May 1, 2013, Calgary Soccer Federation no longer operates the Calgary Soccer Centre. The City of Calgary takes over the maintenance and operation of the Centre, and is exploring options for the future of the Centre.

We do not what the City’s future plans are for the Centre, however, we will continue to work with the City to determine role we can play. We are seeking meetings with City Council, and we will continue to protect the rights of our membership.

The Federation is also exploring other options to ensure indoor soccer continues to have a home in Calgary. And we will continue to be a strong voice for soccer in the city, and continue to advocate on behalf of our members and for the sport.

Player of the Month

CUSA's player of the month program is sponsored by Rics Gril, and is a way for team managers and player to recognize an individual on their team who makes a difference on and off the field.

The player of the month is awarded to one player in the Open division, and one player in either O35 or O45 each month. The winner of player of the month received $100 in gift certificates to Rics Gril, and is also automatically nominated for the annual Player of the Year award.

Nominations are reviewed by an independent judge to declare the monthly winners. Please provide as much information as possible as it helps our judge assist with selection.

Travel Permits

Anytime a team travels outside of Alberta to compete in a tournament or attend a training camp, they must complete a travel permit application.
The application process to attend a camp or a tournament is identical; hereafter, any reference to a Tournament is synonymous with a travel to a camp or series of exhibition games.
Travel permits serve three main purposes:
  1. They provide protection to the traveling team. Travel permits are only approved if the tournament is sanctioned by the associated Provincial, State or National Soccer Association. Restricting travel to tournaments not affiliated with a parent body reduces the risk to teams, as they know they are travelling to a real tournament with universal standards.
  2. They provide protection to the tournament. By requiring a travel permit, tournament organizers know who will attend their event. Travel permits reduce the risk to tournament organizers ensuring the team and players are properly registered and in good standing with their league.
  3. They provide protection to the players.  All players and team officials attending a sanctioned event in Alberta are covered under Alberta Soccer’s (ASA) insurance policy. Travel permits extend this coverage beyond Alberta’s borders for the duration of the tournament

Tier I Provincials

A reminder to all CUSA premier teams that Ethiostar and Darts Premier indicated before the season began that they will not be participating in Provincials, should they qualify. If either team finishes in a provincial contending position, the next highest team in the standing will be expected to participate.

For future seasons, if you feel your team will not be able to attend the provincial championships, CUSA must be notified before the season begins.

Competition and Fair Play

CUSA would like to remind our membership that while we all strive to have competitive games, we all must work together to ensure everyone can go to their job the next day. One way of encouraging sportsmanship is the Fair Play scores. Fair play scores are assigned by the referee of the game, and are not directly related to how many cards each team gets, but how the team conducts themselves on and off the field before, during and after the game. At the end of the season, each team's fair play score is tallied and the teams with the two highest scores share a financial reward.

Team Uniform Color Display

When viewing the schedule in the schedule and standings page on the CUSA website, you will now be able to preview the color of jerseys of your opponent. This will help teams coordinate which colors to wear, based on their opponents jersey colors. It is the responsibility of the home team to change jerseys in the event of a conflict.

AMSL

The Alberta Major Soccer League (AMSL) is the highest level of elite soccer in the province of Alberta. The AMSL provides competition to the top men’s and women’s teams in the cities of Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer and Lethbridge.

CUSA has 3 teams in the AMSL - Callies Major, Villains Elite FC and Dinosaurs Major. To view their upcoming home games or for more information on the league, visit the AMSL website.

This is an incredibly exciting time for Canadian soccer. Over the next few years:

  • We'll welcome the best female players in the world to the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 and the FIFA Women's World Cup Canada 2015TM;
  • Our Men's National Team will pursue its goal of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Russia in 2018; and
  • The explosion in grassroots soccer will carry registration past 1 million – the first team sport in Canada to achieve that total!

311 Mobile App

The City of Calgary recently launched its new YYC 311 app for Iphone and Android devices. Concerns regarding field quality can now be submitted while you are on the field and can include a photo of the issue you are concerned about.

Police Clearances

All team officials and staff on provincial division teams must have a complete and current police clearance check done in order to attend provincials. Rosters submitted to ASA for provincial championships that have team officials without police clearances may be accepted to compete, however the team may be fined up to $2500 for failing to comply with ASA Competition Rules. For information on how to complete your police clearance, contact Adelle at info@cusa.ab.ca

No Alcohol on or Around Soccer Fields

All fields used by Calgary United Soccer Association have a 0 tolerance policy regarding alcohol consumption while at the field. This includes the parking lot and on the sidelines. Any team caught violating this rule will be banned from using that particular field and sanctions handed down to CUSA could result in that team being removed from the league in order for CUSA to retain already booked permits.
