The American Interprofessional Health Collaborative (AIHC) today announced the selection of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute, collectively called Virginia Tech Carilion, as the host for the premier North American conference on interprofessional practice and education in health care, Collaborating Across Borders V. Together with Jefferson College of Health Sciences, Virginia Tech Carilion will host “The Interprofessional Journey: Collaborating to Transform Health Care” in fall 2015 in Roanoke, Va.

“Health systems are facing immense pressure to provide better care for patients while improving population health and reducing costs, and our care delivery system is entering a period of unprecedented, transformative change,” said Barbara Brandt, PhD, AIHC board chair and director of the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education. “Now more than ever, we have to focus on creating a genuine, sustainable collaboration between the practice and education communities that truly prepares our health professions students to work in this rapidly changing marketplace. CAB has become the leading venue for practitioners, scholars, educators, health system leaders, and students to gather and advance that transformative thinking.”

Virginia Tech Carilion was selected for its leadership in interprofessional practice and education and its rich history of collaboration across the Roanoke Valley. An innovative public-private partnership, Virginia Tech Carilion joins Virginia Tech’s world-class strengths in engineering, the basic sciences, computation, the life sciences, informatics, and behavioral science with Carilion Clinic’s highly experienced care team and rich history in health professions education.

“Collaboration is nothing new to Roanoke, Virginia Tech, or Carilion Clinic,” said Dr. David Trinkle, conference chair and associate dean for community and culture at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. “Our leadership in interprofessional practice and education – combined with our success rate in offering high-quality, engaging conferences – makes us a natural choice to host such a large high-profile event.”

Roanoke, set in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, abounds with natural beauty, art, culture, history, regional cuisine and outdoor adventure. CAB V will take place at the fully restored Tudor-style Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center, built in 1882 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Roanoke Regional Airport offers seven daily flights to nine international hubs and is located 10 minutes from downtown.

About Collaborating Across Borders
The Collaborating Across Borders conference series began in 2007 as a partnership among a group of dedicated, U.S.-based leaders in interprofessional health and the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (CIHC). Collaborating Across Borders I was held on the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities campus, and in 2009 during Collaborating Across Borders II, the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative was formed. Since that time, the bi-annual conference has alternated between an American and Canadian host institution. This year, CAB IV will be hosted by the University of British Columbia in Vancouver from June 12 to 14, with more than 700 participants expected.
