Summer newsletter - July 2013
View this email in your browser
Dear Friend,

Wherever you may be this July, we hope you are coping with the heat and enjoying the summer! Here at the Office of Sustainability, we find that (like many departments at Tufts, I suspect) summer never quite slows down. We are getting ready to hold condensed Eco-Ambassador training sessions in Boston this August, teeing up preparations for fall orientation, as well as planning for the new fiscal year.

Hubway station at TuftsThere are many exciting things to look forward to on campus - one of which has already happened: a new Hubway station was installed at the corner of Packard Ave and Powderhouse Blvd this week! This brings Somerville's total to 11, which includes stations in Teele, Powder House, Ball, and Davis Squares.

Our newsletter drops to our monthly (vs bi-weekly) schedule for the rest of summer, but do stay in touch with all that's green and wonderful at Tufts through our Facebook and Twitter accounts. Jobs and events also continue to get posted to our blog.

Stay cool!

SUMMER 2013
In This Issue:

Looking for an interesting class this fall?

2010 ex-college class
Consider taking the Ex-College class Environmental Action: Shifting from Saying to Doing on Wednesdays, 6-8:30pm. This course is designed for students who want a refreshing way to examine the story behind the environmental concerns in the news through the lens of psychology, social marketing, and critical thinking. Students who took the class were behind initiatives such as Trayless Dining and eliminating the sale of single-serve water bottles (resulting in 73% reduction of plastic bottle usage!) at Hodgdon Good-to-Go, the takeout location for Tufts Dining.

Boston Eco Ambassador sessions to be held in August

Two half-day sessions will be held once again in the Boston campus for those interested in training to become Eco-Ambassadors. The condensed program will run from 11:00 to 3:00 pm (lunch included) in the Dental Building at 1 Kneeland Street on the following days:

  • August 6 (Tue) – Dental School Board Room (Rm 1533)
  • August 13 (Tue) – Dental School Alumni Lounge (Rm 1514)

Tufts Recycling Manager joins Boston Recycling Coalition task force

Dawn Quirk Congratulations to Dawn Quirk, Waste Reduction Program Manager for Facilities Services at Tufts, for being invited to the Boston Recycling Coalition (BRC) task force to draw up a list of recommendations to advance strong waste reduction and diversion policies in Boston for the new mayor (whomever that may be). Dawn was recommended to BRC as "a university recycling coordinator who is not only knowledgeable about recycling, but also in touch with the student body."

Kudos to Dawn, who has been an outstanding resource for all things recycling here at Tufts!

Enjoy fresh, local vegetables

Farmers markets near TuftsSign up for a farm share or visit a nearby farmers market. Remember, World PEAS CSA delivers to both the Medford and Tufts campus while Enterprise Farms has a dropoff at Flatbread in Davis Square
