The Only Social Café in Town
The English Cup Cafe was established to build community at Salem Social Village and more widely in the city. Shymkent already has plenty of business centers, English courses, aid organizations, programs for children with special needs, clinics and cafes. Our aim in what we do is that people – students, grandmothers, kids, people with disabilities, the poor in this country – be touched, impacted, changed, empowered. How that happens is through people: lives connecting with lives.
So how are lives connecting at the Café? And what is a social Café anyway? Well, all profits from the Cafe are used to fund projects at the Social Village as well as other charitable causes. We call it a social café because we host many different activities throughout the week which are focussed not on the commercial but the social. These activities include Conversation Clubs, Movie Club, and a club for people with disabilities called “Corner of Hope.†We also have Friday Nights when we open till late for people to spend an evening hanging out and talking, not always just in English, and this is where a large part of our student community is built. Each one of these events aids in connecting people, which often results in lives impacted, touched and people leaving feeling changed (for a reason that they usually can’t explain.)
Often people come into the Cafe with ambitions centred around making as much money as possible - after all, English is the window to success and many of them come here to learn English from all of our native English speakers. But part of our vision is that these people who come in wanting nothing but success would meet people and experience things at the Social Village that would make them realize that they were made for so much more.
Thank you so much for partnering with us as we serve coffees and companionship!
