The Only Social Café in Town

The English Cup Cafe was established to build community at Salem Social Village and more widely in the city. Shymkent already has plenty of business centers, English courses, aid organizations, programs for children with special needs, clinics and cafes. Our aim in what we do is that people – students, grandmothers, kids, people with disabilities, the poor in this country – be touched, impacted, changed, empowered. How that happens is through people: lives connecting with lives.

So how are lives connecting at the Café? And what is a social Café anyway? Well, all profits from the Cafe are used to fund projects at the Social Village as well as other charitable causes. We call it a social café because we host many different activities throughout the week which are focussed not on the commercial but the social. These activities include  Conversation Clubs, Movie Club, and a club for people with disabilities called “Corner of Hope.” We also have Friday Nights when we open till late for people to spend an evening hanging out and talking, not always just in English, and this is where a large part of our student community is built. Each one of these events aids in connecting people, which often results in lives impacted, touched and people leaving feeling changed (for a reason that they usually can’t explain.)

Often people come into the Cafe with ambitions centred around making as much money as possible - after all, English is the window to success and many of them come here to learn English from all of our native English speakers. But part of our vision is that these people who come in wanting nothing but success would meet people and experience things at the Social Village that would make them realize that they were made for so much more.

Thank you so much for partnering with us as we serve coffees and companionship!

Numbers

The number of freezes we sold in the café the month of June. That’s 8 freezes a day! During the hot summer months the number of baked goods sold goes down and the number of freezes skyrockets. We'd love to sell you one sometime!
A Close Friendship

Although we are a fully independent local organisation, it hasn’t been that way for long. We were part of Crossroads for nine years, until March this year, and it was hard to say goodbye. However, our parting was a really positive step forward – for both us and them! We are still working in close partnership with the Crossroads team in Hong Kong, and they are continuing to generously support our work here, particularly through sending containers of humanitarian aid which we distribute across the region.

As an indication of our ongoing partnership with Crossroads, four people from our team are currently in Hong Kong for two weeks. Crossroads invited us to send some people over to visit them and take part in specific training in how to run simulations for our Life Xperience department. These simulations, such as the Aids Xperience, that provide an opportunity to experience life from another’s perspective were developed in Hong Kong by Crossroads. This trip will also give our team the opportunity to deepen existing working relationships between Hong Kong and the Social Village, and we’re looking forward to benefitting from their new knowledge, skills and experience in the years ahead. Thanks Crossroads!
The Salem Social Village in Shymkent, Kazakhstan is run by Salem Union, a local non-profit non-religious charity organisation which works to care for the needy and influence a generation of future leaders
