TRUE Mentors and Girls, Inc.: Unearthing Girls Potential

Recently, TRUE Mentors teamed up with Girls, Inc. to host a three-part conference on the topics of self-esteem and building a positive self-image.  The nearly 30 girls in attendance engaged in discussions and role-playing activities.

“There was a sense of old-fashioned community as the girls and adult female volunteers met in the Teen Center of the Boys and Girls Club of Hoboken. They explored the topic of self-esteem and body image by watching short films, creating collages, acting in skits, and participating in discussions,” stated Donna Sells, Family Coordinator.

The missions of both Girls Inc and TRUE Mentors align in a significant way: to empower children. Sheila Parry, Family Coordinator, compared the two organizations. “Girls Inc is designed to empower girls to be strong, bold, beautiful and confident with themselves. TRUE Mentors seeks to empower the children we work with to be strong and confident with themselves and help them realize they can be/do anything they want in life.” She also went on to state, “The girls interacted with, and accepted, the volunteers as ‘big sisters’, a positive role model, much like the volunteers and mentors that work with TRUE Mentors.”

The Girls, Inc. conference was made possible by a grant presented to TRUE Mentors by Party with Purpose.

Thoughts From Mentors
"When you have a sense of your own identity and a vision of where you want to go in your life, you then have the basis for reaching out to the world and going after your dreams for a better life."

Q: Why does Ben & Jerry's partner with local organizations?
What made you choose TRUE Mentors?
A: Ben and Jerry's wants to make a difference through the brand.  People really respond positively to Ben & Jerry's and it's about creating smiles one scoop at a time. We can make more of an impact and difference when we partner with local organizations. We love sharing the love and in turn the community shows their love for Ben & Jerry's.

We choose TRUE Mentors because we believe that it takes a community to raise a child.  Giving kids a structured environment is the key and TRUE Mentors is definitely doing that.  Being a mentor is so important!

Dear Friends,
It is an honor and privilege to be able to write to you as Executive Director and I hope everyone is having an enjoyable summer.  TRUE Mentors has been part of my life since July 2011.  I was a Mentor, a Volunteer Coordinator, a Co-Class Director and I also worked on Fundraising.  These last two years taught me so much about myself and about the value of helping others.  It also enlightened me to the mission and the appreciation for each volunteer.  TRUE Mentors exists to unearth the potential of children in Hoboken through relationships.  Through enabling others, we are also unearthing our own potential.

Mid-Year Highlights
1.  Matched 8 people year to date with 5 pending.
2.  Taught 54 children in our classes with 57 unique volunteers.
3.  Hosted Girls, Inc. session, in which we reached almost 30 young girls over three weeks.

These highlights remind me that we are not in this alone.  Mia Hamm said, “I am a member of a team, and I rely on the team, I defer to it and sacrifice for it, because the team, not the individual, is the ultimate champion.”  I know that each of us sacrifice for the same mission.  Each role in the organization from donor to mentor to mentee family is important.  I challenge myself and our leaders to make sure no one feels alone in this organization.

I look forward to moving this organization forward and the ultimate champions are the children, Hoboken and each of us.

Best,
James
