The San Francisco Foundation and SOMArts Cultural Center present

THE ANNUAL MURPHY AND CADOGAN

CONTEMPORARY ART AWARDS EXHIBITION

Juried selection showcases best of Bay Area MFA programs; accompanying events identify key influences in Bay Area art and connect artists with the public for creative skill-sharing, September 3–28, 2013

San Francisco, CA, July 8, 2013 The San Francisco Foundation and SOMArts Cultural Center present a focused look at the future of the Bay Area visual and media arts landscape, September 3–28, 2013. The Annual Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards Exhibition showcases the work of promising visual artists from regional Master of Fine Arts (MFA) programs working across disciplines and identifies young artists whose work intersects with emerging trends.

Opening with a reception and awards ceremony Friday, September 6, 2013, 6:30–9pm, awards at 7:00pm, the exhibition surveys new work from the 26 recipients of the competitive Jack and Gertrude Murphy Fellowships and the Edwin Anthony and Adelaine Bourdeaux Cadogan Art Awards, administered by The San Francisco Foundation.

The Fellowships provide a varying number of annual tuition awards of $5,000 to Bay Area Fine Arts graduate students in support of exploring and developing their artistic potential in digital art, film/video, hybrid practice, installation, mixed media, painting, photography and sculpture.

Tere Romo, Program Officer for Arts and Culture at The San Francisco Foundation, commented, “The early phase of an artist’s career is when encouragement and financial support matter most. Through the generosity of our donors, the Murphy and Cadogan Contemporary Art Awards will support exemplary graduate student artists at a crucial time—and lift up the next generation of artists who will ensure the Bay Area remains a thriving center for arts and culture. The San Francisco Foundation is proud to recognize and support these exceptional artists.”

Lex Leifheit, Executive Director of SOMArts commented, “As an organization, we wholeheartedly embrace the opportunity to connect student artists with the South of Market Cultural Center's rich legacy of community activism and cultural learning. Each year this exhibition becomes more popular as a chance to connect longtime San Franciscans with emerging talents and together peer into the future of Bay Area arts and ideas."

Fellowship recipients were selected by Monica Ramirez-Montagut, Associate Director and Senior Curator of MACLA/San Jose Center for Latino Arts and Justin Hoover, Curator and Gallery Director of SOMArts Cultural Center. After careful evaluation of the 117 applicants, the panel recommended the following outstanding MFA visual art students to receive awards.
