Connecting Equalities in Glasgow
Wed 10th July 2013

We are delighted to be welcoming Yvonne Strachan, Head of Equality, Human Rights and Third Sector Division at the Scottish Government, as our keynote speaker at this FREE event.
Glasgow is in the process of finalising the new Single Outcome Agreement for the city and Scottish Government guidance on SOAs stresses that:-

“Equality considerations should run through all the activities of the CPP and be woven into the development of its SOA… Community Planning partners already have considerable experience of work on equality and it is important that this is utilised and built on.”
   -   Single Outcome Agreements: Guidance to Community Partnerships, Scottish Government, December 2012

Come along to hear about this and find out more about the Public Sector Equality Duties and how they could impact on your organisation. There will also be advice and information to help your organisation contribute to improving equality outcomes in Glasgow.   We will have speakers from the Scottish Government, the Equality and Human Rights Commission, the NHS and Glasgow City Council, who will talk about the work they are currently doing around the equality duties.  There will be space for you to share your own experiences of collecting and using equalities information.  We will also canvas your views on how the Third Sector can share its knowledge and expertise with the public sector to drive forward equality issues that make a real difference to the people of Glasgow.   More info/book….

PIP Mobility Component Rule Revisited
The UK Government has bowed to pressure from disability campaigners over changes to the mobility component of DLA under the new Personal Independence Payments system. The Government wants to introduce a measure that will reduce the 50m rule to 20m – meaning that those who can walk 20 metres or more will be ineligible for the higher mobility component; a move that would affect 48,000 people in Scotland with disabilities.  The DWP will now consult on the proposal following widespread criticism and moves towards seeking a Judicial Review by campaigners.  More...

Scotland’s Play Strategy Published
The importance of play to the health and wellbeing of children was highlighted last week by the publication of the Scottish Government's Play Strategy. Following on from a number of initiatives aimed at improving the lives and life chances of Scotland's children, the Play Strategy sets out a commitment to promoting play in a number of settings, from the family home to the community.  The strategy encourages a risk-benefit approach to playing outside – a move away from the culture of risk aversion and the inflated sense of danger that can often lead to children being kept inside, with little freedom to grow and develop as individuals.  More...
