Sawasdee, Namaste, Salaam, Sabaydee, Om Swasti Astu, Hello!...

It is great to be here and sharing the Tusker’s adventure. Well, let us tell you what’s been happening at VegVoyages’. We finished the Rajasthan cookbook shoot and now the editor, writer and photographer back in Hong Kong are busy working to put all the recipes together. We are so excited to see the end result. We had also finished with our final round of the South India Serenade preparation. So we look forward to welcome all travelers the end of the year.

The picture above is from our recent group in India. We were there for Holi and we had soo much fun celebrating. Outside of the religious purpose, Holi, also known as the Festival of Color celebrates the beginning of the new season, spring. During this event, participants hold a bonfire and throw colored powder at each other. Fun-filled day!...

Our Bali adventure is just finished. We had a great time with great group of travelers!... Now we are getting ready to welcome our Malaysia travelers.  We are looking forward to share this experience with them. Home to some of the tastiest vegan food in the world! Rich and spicy dishes influenced by Malay, Chinese, Thai and Indian cuisines make Malaysia a veritable culinary "melting pot"

We added 2014 tour dates on the website and will be adding 2015 dates in July. So, if you want to start planning for your VegVoyages adventures, please visit www.VegVoyages.com. Please Pass the Naan?: A Veggie Vacation in Rajasthan

“A tour group? As in a group of tourists packed in a charter bus with their issues on display for everyone to see? Swooning over the “exotic” on display at tourist hotspots where I’m sure to be ripped off.” Sounds great, let’s do it!”

My sarcasm did nothing to deter her. Unfazed - as though she expected my response - and determined to make her case, my wife Karissa continued. “The company limits each tour to certain numbers of travelers, places four to a car and, while they do visit some historic sights, they make a point of going off the beaten path. And it’s a vegetarian company - meaning that we can eat everything offered!”

Being a vegetarian in rural Washington was beginning to test the finitude of Karissa’s passivity for well-intentioned waiters promoting chicken as a meatless option. Moreover, she had lost her taste for the only vegetarian option available at coastal restaurants; iceberg salads.

A few days went by until the question came again. “Do you want to go to India for our anniversary?” We hadn’t traveled since our honeymoon six years prior - a short trip across the border into Canada and we’d felt pulled to India for just as many years. I couldn’t decline, despite how reluctant I felt about a structured tour.

“O.K., If we are to travel with a group let’s invite friends.” I suggested. It was all the confirmation Karissa needed. We contacted and received an affirmative reply from our close friends Mike and Pam who were teaching in China at the time. Karissa immediately booked reservations for four.

We arrived in Delhi late - while I don’t recall the exact time, I do remember it being late enough that one does not expect to see chipper individuals milling about.
Yet, there they were, Singhji and Zac - the co-owners of Veg Voyages and our guides for the next two weeks - their smiles wide and welcoming. After acclimating for a couple of days in Delhi, we get into compact SUVs, veered into traffic, and we were away on our excursion.

And a remarkable excursion it was. Of course the food did not disappoint - it far exceeded our expectations - but perhaps the most surprising thing was what we thought we knew about Indian food coming into this trip. Our previous exposure to Indian fare - presumably homogenized and bolstered up by the culinary heritage of restauranteurs and the average American palate - was infinitesimal compared to the vast possibilities that emerged from Rajasthan’s austere desert landscape.

Sixteen days, ten different locales and approximately forty-five vegetarian meals into our trip, we had not eaten aloo gobi, chana masala, naan or any other standards found on the menus of our favorite Indian restaurants in the States.

As the tour came to a close our group had a deeper appreciation for the regional nuances of Indian cuisine. And I had come to accept that tour companies weren’t inherently dastardly businesses. In fact, Zac and Singhji’s joint ability to tread thoughtfully through communities and interact respectfully with community members whilst providing their clients with an insightful and relaxing experience warranted admiration. What was more, during the course of the tour, Singhji’s joviality and Zac’s attentive consideration for people in which he came into contact fostered the workings of new friendships that have lasted to the present day. Our days in Rajasthan were too few. Our introduction to Rajasthani culture to brief; and our return inevitable.

Seven years later, Mike and I arrived once more to the same welcoming smiles in hopes of broadening our personal understanding of Rajasthani cuisine. We returned to the desert with Zac, Singhji - and this time Yusi - with the express hope of documenting the preparation of certain Rajasthani dishes. VegVoyages graciously partnered with Mike, Pam, Karissa and I, to pursue a dream we’ve had since that original tour so long ago. We are in the process of putting together a cookbook/coffee-table book that showcases a variety of the unique and wondrous dishes of Rajasthani cuisine. We will feature various cooks from the region— including the hospitable and generous women of Singhji’s own family!—and deliver recipes from home kitchens as well as palaces, truck stops as well as restaurants. We will dive into the cultural importance of certain ingredients and dishes, and showcase the beauty of the region through original photography.

The book will be published by Yellow Heron Press and set for release early next year. You are invited to follow the project as it develops, at www.yellowheronpress.com and here in the VegVoyages newsletter. You can also see some of the photos taken during the making of this book at www.robatkinsonphoto.com.
WHAT OUR RECENT TRAVELER SAY ABOUT VEGVOYAGES:

Hello Sofna,

I returned from my Indian adventure a couple of weeks back and just wanted to say that it was a truly memorable trip, made even better by the brilliant tour leader Singhiji.

To experience the vibrancy of this fascinating country and to interact with the local people was a real privilege.  Every day had a highlight and our guide had detailed knowledge which made the experience even better.  What particularly impressed me were the extras that were provided free of charge such as bottled water, fruit, map, and teas etc.

I would recommend Vegvoyages to anyone who wants to experience a country in the most responsible and ethical way.  I'm already looking forward to my next trip!

Kind Regards

Today, we set out into the desert traveling off-the-beaten-track to the historical kingdom of Kishangarh. Founded by a Jodhpur Prince four centuries ago, the Kingdom of Kishangarh flourished due to its military prowess and fortunes, its earning as a member of Mughal court.

This stunning place with much great history in art, crafts and culture is located about 15 km away from Ajmer.  A Navgrah temple located at the heart of the city attracts many devotees. It is believed that the sacred river Saraswathy flows under this desert region of Kishangarh.

On our Camels & Canines & Cows… oh My! – 15 days Volunteer adventure, we stay at the Maharajah’s Moonsoon Palace. Located on the edge of Gundalao Lake, the palace was built in 1870 just outside of the walls of the massive medieval Kishangarh Fort.

The Maharajahs here were not only known for their successes on the battlefield, but also as patrons of the arts.  The palace is a living example of the splendor of the Rathore Rajputs. The walls of the beautiful palace are adorned by striking frescoes and gorgeous murals. The area itself is the birthplace of Kishangarh style of painting, which is known for the beautiful depiction of a courtesan: Bani Thani (Bani Thani has been labeled as India’s Monalisa).

In recent years, Kishangarh has come to be known as the marble city of India. So during our stay in here we’ll explore local produce market and also get a chance to learn a bit about marble, from the quarry to the cutting factory to the final products.

At VegVoyages, we believe in responsible travel and giving back to the communities and places we visit is an important philosophy that we held very high. We feel it is important to make travel and discovery beneficial to everyone – our guests and the people and places we visit. As part of VegVoyages’ aim to bring people closer to the destination we are in, our groups regularly several institutions/organization to raise awareness and contribute to several worthy causes. From helping keep rural schools running by providing books and other materials to assisting in funding for grassroots animal rights and care organizations.

For us travel is not only our business, but a way to do something - however modest it may be - to help communities, people, animals and other causes we believe in. In addition to direct help, we also always try to use locally grown produce and ingredients for our meals, local labor to help as guides, cooks, drivers, etc., stay in locally owned accommodations and conduct our adventures in as an eco-friendly way as possible.

One of our ways of giving back is by working closely with Animal Aid, a local grassroots organization dedicated in helping wounded and abused animals in Udaipur. We dedicated our Camels & Canines & Cows… oh My! – a 15 day India adventure for those who wanted to explore and experience the cultures of one of the most stunning regions in India and yet wanted to also dedicate some times to helping the wounded animals.

This year, we are celebrating 6 years of our collaboration with Animal Aid. We are also very happy to hear that after the adventure over, many of VegVoyages travelers ARE STILL giving back to Animal Aid. Whether giving donation on monthly basis, once a year, keeping contacts, and even set up booth at various animal charitable events to help raise awareness and funding for Animal Aid. This really makes us proud of our travelers.

We are proud that they helped out during their adventure and we are very proud to know that the help did not stop just because the tour is over. Our travelers continue to give back; and for this, from all of us at VegVoyages, WE THANK YOU.
