Please join us for the next CRHS Historical Presentation Series - Artists of Pikes Peak on July 11.   Filmmaker Jim Sawatzki will present on July 11 a fascinating artists of the region. Jim is a Telly Award winning and Emmy Nominated producer and director who has been documenting Front Range Colorado history since 1992. Join us on July 11, 7:00-8:00 pm at P.S. Miller Library. Refreshments at 6:30 by The Cakery

Calendar

  • July 11 - Jim Sawatzki. Filmmaker Jim Sawatzki will present "Artists of Pikes Peak." The Pikes Peak region has attracted artists and artisans since time out of mind. From aboriginal peoples who etched figures in stone to 20th century artists who inspired the world. Come join us for a fascinating presentation.
  • July 27 - Walking and biking tours. Park at the Museum and walk over to The Courtyard at Siena at 3rd and Perry streets. The tours start at 10:30 am, last around 45 minutes, and end up at the Museum. Family friendly and free.
  • August 17 - 1:00 pm Summer Party at the Museum. "Circle the Wagons - a Modern Chuck Wagon Dinner" features local entertainment, historical games. In a fun twist modern day chuck wagons, food trucks, will serve refreshments. The event is free, and proceeds from food sales benefit CRHS. Come for a relaxed community afternoon!
  • August 24 - Walking and biking tours, 10:30 am
Join us second Thursdays, 6:30 pm at P.S. Miller Library for refreshments. The presentation starts at 7:00. The Presentation Series is free and open to all! Thank you to The Cakery, event sponsor, who provides glorious goodies.
 

News

Museum Report
The Museum hosted 285 visitors in May, our third month this year for highest ever visitor totals!  The Denver special Needs Group came, as did Clear Sky Elementary, and 13 states are represented. 
  • State Historical Fund Grant –Most of the work complete and sent 6th progress report to State Historical fund
  • Briefed Town Council on 1st Quarter activities
  • Trolley Tour – Conducted five Trolley Tours for 131 people. Had to turn people away. Thanks to tour guides, Shawn, Jim, John and Angie!
  • Railroad Baggage Cart donated by couple in Black Forest.  We picked up with Kent’s Car Trailer.  Talking to Railroad museum about restoration needs.
  • Booth at 5th Car Show featuring Castle Rock’s Racetrack, CDR. A great location provided lots of attention.  Thanks to Kent  and the whole museum staff for helping.
  • Attended ANFRM(local museum assoc.) meeting – more possible Scout projects identified.
  • Continuing work on Dr. Alexander exhibit for Adventist Medical Office Building.  Grand opening Sunday 14 Jul, 9am to 1pm.
  • Will work on county window as soon as access arranged 
  • Walking & Biking tours begin this month

  • Indian Artifacts through Sept  - article in News Press arranged by Jim
  • Castle Rock leaf fossils again on loan from Denver Museum of Nature and Science for 1yr at least
  • Jim working on Adventist Hospital Exhibit 
  • Events – Trolley Tour for Assisted Living Groups scheduled for Monday

Society Report
DC "Chess" Oakes at Castle Rock Historical Society Membership MeetingThe June Membership Meeting featured Larry Schlupp as "Chess" Oakes. Larry Schlupp is Daniel Chessman “Chess” Oakes in the Life & Times of Oakes” replete with animated slide show.  An pioneer of Douglas County, Oakes was a surveyor, entrepreneur, developer, lumber man, vigilante, legislature, Indian agent, family man and one of the founders of Denver.  Oakes relates the influence of his father and the loss of his mother.  Oakes influential and loving wife, was the strength of his convictions.  Her cousin, William F. Cody, was the instrument that put the “Fire in the belly” of Oakes in developing his drive to settle West.  He was close friends with Kit Carson and Territorial Governor, Alexander Hunt.  His friend, Mountain-man Jim Baker, was his best friend and confidant. Thank you to The Cakery, event sponsor, who provided tempting treats!

Historic walking and biking tours began in June and run through September. They are at 10:30 am on the fourth Saturday of each month. Tours are free and family-friendly and accessible to people of all abilities. Park at the Museum and walk/bike over to The Courtyard at Siena (3rd and Perry St.). See you there!
