Montessori Moment

A Letter from the Board President

Kathy Korducki

The end of a school year often marks a transition and this year is no exception for my family.  For the first time in 12 years, we will not have a child enrolled at MSBG when school begins in the Fall.  Mary Grace and her 6th year classmates completed the upper elementary cycle and were clapped out of the building on Wednesday, June 5, prior to the Field Day games; each of them ready to embark on a unique middle school journey.  While most of them may be moving on, I know they will hold the school close in their hearts.  My other children certainly do.

The close of this school year marks another transition as well.  I have had the privilege of serving on the MSBG Board of Directors for the last six years and as President of the Board for the past three.  This summer I will pass the presidential gavel to Mr. Eric Myerholtz, a former school parent, whose three children are MSBG alum.  His daughter Emily, a very accomplished young woman and role model for my daughters, was featured in the Alumni Spotlight on 5/31.  Eric brings to the school strong business and financial acumen.  He is a CPA, currently with Roppe Corporation, a manufacturer based in Fostoria.  No less importantly, he brings a passion for the Montessori Method, which he developed as he watched a “love of learning” be instilled in his children during the years they attended the school.

My years on the Board have been marked with change.  I had the tremendous opportunity to serve on the search committee that made the recommendation to extend an offer to Miss Bev to serve as our Executive Director.  As she began her role as ED, I stepped into the role of Board President and we have learned together along the way.  It has been wonderful to work in partnership with her as the school has embarked on exciting new ventures, while at the same time solidifying our base.

I am pleased to share there have been many positive and exciting changes in the past three years.  We have greatly strengthened our financial position, increased enrollment, and enhanced the curriculum.  We earned reaccreditation this year!  We have our garden – a living science lesson; our beautiful walking trail; a robust foreign language program – unrivaled in BG; music and fine arts programming not offered at other area elementary schools; many extracurricular activities; and an active, engaged school community.  We have received grants and the buzz in Bowling Green about MSBG is very positive.  We have children joining us at the upper elementary level - something that didn’t happen often in the past – exciting, but with challenges to the staff to ensure the students assimilate well into the Montessori classroom.  Last, but not least, we have a family who has decided to remain at MSBG for 7th grade and will help us in a grand experiment to launch an expansion of our teaching curriculum to once again include middle school programming.

As we move forward under Bev and Eric’s leadership, the Board, faculty and staff still face challenges requiring the support of the school community.  While we have many wonderful things happening, we are faced with the reality of a building that is reaching the age where maintenance and repair needs have increased.  We had roof work completed this year – at no cost to the school - to correct problems dating back to construction of the upper elementary addition.  We do not have a “Building Fund” per se, and are faced with the immediate need to replace flooring, particularly in the older section of the building; repair/replace HVAC equipment; and the reality of aging water heaters.  Further, we have significant debt, and although refinanced to obtain the lowest interest rate possible, the mortgage payments represent our next largest expense following salaries/benefits.  We must address these needs while striving to keep tuition within reach of our families.

We are blessed with a growing donor base, and greatly appreciate their financial support.  Likewise we appreciate the gifts of time and talent so many of our families share in the classroom and to maintain and improve our school grounds and building.  But, as most of us experience in our daily lives, there is always a need for more.

We have accomplished much in the last three years and our school is in a stronger position, poised to meet the educational needs of our community.  I look forward to continuing in an active role on the Board under Eric’s leadership in partnership with Bev, Jess and our wonderful teachers and staff.  Thank you for all you do for the Montessori School of Bowling Green Community.  It has been a great privilege to serve you.

Warmest regards,
Kathy Korducki

MSBG Promise
The MSBG Promise:
We will always do what is the very best for the children and the school as a whole.

·      Hands-on materials: We have enough materials for two full lower elementary and two full upper elementary classrooms that can be used when numbers dictate that kind of expansion. There is a likelihood that Lower Elementary will expand to two classrooms for this fall.

·      Highly-qualified teachers: Per our accreditation, we MUST have one credentialed Montessori professional in each classroom in addition to other highly-trained staff. We have enough credentialed teachers on staff to appropriately staff all classrooms.

·      Individualized Education: We will always meet each child’s potential. Keeping student/teacher ratios as low as possible is essential for individualization.
