RECAP
NLB-TEAM WINS NIGHT GAME
Tuesday July 30, 2013 - by Serge Kuenzler
The NLB-Team bounced back from two tough losses against the Jona Bandits two weeks ago, as the Challengers celebrated a 9-8 victory against Zürich Barracudas. The two local rivals battled for 3 hours and 47 minutes on Tuesday night, before reliever Oliver Christen selt the deal with a strikeout with the tying run on third.

The C's took the lead in the third inning, as they scored three runs for a 3-2 lead, which they didn't give away till the end. Dean Scherbaum drove in Gregory Zingg with a RBI-double to extend the lead to two runs and after the Barracudas cut the deficit to one run again, Carlos Nepomuceno had a triple and scored in the fifth, before delivering a two-run single in the sixth to make it 8-4. The Barracudas fought strong and answered with two runs of their own, while the C's scored an insurance run in the seventh, as Yusuke Azuma drove in Francesco Falcone. The Barracudas managed to get another run in the bottom of the ninth, but Christen ended the threat for a much needed Challengers victory.

Dean Scherbaum was credited with the win, as he gave up six runs in 5.1 innings of work, while Oliver Christen tossed 3.2 innings for the save.

The two teams will face each other again on Tuesday, August 6 for another night game at the Heerenschürli ballpark.
EAGLES FLY OVER SOFTBALL-TEAM
Sunday July 21, 2013 - by Macy MorganPhoto Album
The Softball-Team faced the reigning Swiss champion on Sunday, July 21 at Reussbühl and the Challengers could not beat the heat in Sundays game against the Luzern Eagles. The Challengers defense was unable to stop the Eagles bats which ended up leading to a 10-1 victory for the Eagles in the first game.

In the second game the Challengers came out with new momentum scoring early in the game yet once hitting the field again the Challengers back on defense were again unable to stop the Eagles offense. During the second game the Challengers bats started to finally come around but unfortunatley they were never able to string any hits together ending the game in 5 innings 11-2.

The Challengers remain in fourth place with a 4-12 record. The C's face the Bern Cardinals August 24th seeking to clinch hold of the 4th spot to make it to the playoff to look for their revenge against the Eagles.
OFFENSE ON SUMMER HOLIDAY

Just before the European Championship, the SG Truck Star/Challengers had to travel to Thun to take on the local Hunters and Yverdon Golgoths. Because of numerous absences, the SG had to rely on U15 players manning the outfield. On one hand, it was nice to integrate the young guys and letting them get their feet wet in 1st league games, but on the other hand their lack of experience was obvious in (not making) some key plays. In the end the SG lost two more games. The Hunters beat them 20-3 and the Golgoths took the win home with 16-1.

The first game versus the Hunters started off nicely. After 2 pitches the first out was recorded. But after back-to-back triples over the outfielders’ heads and a home run the Hunters were up 3-0 and still only one out. Two more runs scored in the inning when it was finally the SG’s turn to hit. The Hunters’ starter only needed 8 pitches to retire the first 2 SG hitters. But a 2 out rally by Romang, Koley and Matter cut the score to 5-2.

The 2nd inning was bad – pitching-wise, defensively and offensively. Challengers’ starter Michel Romang retired the first batter only after 6 more runs have crossed the plate. A total of 8 more runs for the Hunters put the game out of reach. The bottom half of the inning was a short story as neither Pomuceno, Wyss nor Zuberbühler were able to reach base.

In the 3rd inning, the Hunters got 4 more runs – highlighted by an inside-the-park home runs by which the the SG players seemed to be on a coffee break. 4 players were not able to catch the ball, throw it cleanly and relay to home quickly. In the bottom half, the SG tried the “sledgehammer-approach”. The first 2 batters reached base safely, but Cedric Thommen was then picked-off and caught stealing 3rd. After Romang got on base, he tried to steal 2nd on the pitcher’s first move (which was to third) and was thrown out easily. How does a team want to score when 2 of 3 base-runners are thrown out by being too aggressive?

The 4th inning was a quick one as neither team (not even the Hunters) were able to score! In the 5th the Hunters scored 3 more runs while the SG struck out twice and grounded-out once to finish the ballgame by losing 20-3.

The second game versus Yverdon Golgoths was a short story. In 5 innings, the SG was only able to get 2 hits, 2 walks and one run (which came on a passed ball). The Golgoths capitalized of 8 errors committed by the SG defense and went on to score a total of 16 runs. The only highlight for the SG came in the first inning as Zuberbühler and Romang combined for a beautiful 9-6 double play.

Summary: It was obvious that the SG Truck Star/Challengers needs more experience and depth. Every gameday the team features new players on the field which makes it extremely difficult to get routine – also for the players who are moved around the field a lot. Moreover, the offense started to struggle the last couple of games, which makes it even tougher for the players as most of the time, the game is out of reach after 2 innings. But we will keep fighting for our first win!

U15 CADETS EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFIER, MIEJSKA GORKA, POLEN
Wednesday July 31, 2013 - by Serge Kuenzler
