INTERESTED IN CURRENT REFUGEE ISSUES?

Ever wanted to know why people become desperate to leave their home land? Why are refugees traveling in dangerous conditions to reach our shores?

Machan is a multi award winning film produced in Sri Lanka with a local cast and directed by Italian Uberto Pasolini that provides some insights into these questions. The film will be screened at Tribal Theatre for the first time in Brisbane on the 28 July from 3pm onwards. Produced in 2008, Machan, meaning 'mate' in Sinhala, is loosely based on real events and portrays a group of Sri Lankans trying to leave their country by creating a handball team to attend the world championships in Germany.

Please join in for this special and worthwhile event: a screening of "Machan" -  on the 28th July from 3 pm onwards at the Tribal Theatre, 346 George Street, Brisbane City.

Tickets are $20 presold or $25 on the door and includes some traditional Sri Lankan snacks, however if you reply to this newsletter with the text "I support Sri Lankan change makers" you'll get your ticket for $15 presold. You can purchase your tickets via Sticky Tickets (at regular prices) or by bank deposit or cash for the reduced ticket cost. See links below.

Ferment Collaborate, through the Venesa Matram Program, is presenting this entertaining and thought provoking movie in Brisbane to raise funds for projects with Sri Lankan communities in Australia and Sri Lanka.

Specifically, Machan is raising funds for the Creative Social Change Symposium we produce in Sri Lanka which will be held in December this year. There's some information below about the Symposium - please contact us to find out more.

The Creative Social Change Symposium

The Venesa Matram Symposium is a networking, skill building and collaboration supporting event for arts, cultural and community workers in Sri Lanka. The annual event aims to create a space for dialogue, exchange and experience sharing that can support more connected and effective community building by creative practitioners.

The Symposium encourages practitioners to learn new skills, share their own practice and discuss needs and approaches related to the communities they work with. Ferment Collaborate, an Australian-based community cultural development agency, produces the Symposium in collaboration with community agencies based in Sri Lanka.

Our focus in delivering the event is to connect practitioners from around the island and in the process break down geographic, cultural and religious boundaries that have been reinforced through over 30 years of conflict. By working with those who deliver community development work, we aim to empower facilitators to in turn work with communities to address these same issues.

This year, the second delivery of the Symposium, we are working with the Kaveri Kalamanram Cultural Organisation based in Jaffna and Killinochi. We have an organising collective drawn from around Sri Lanka and Australia and are currently designing the Symposium's theming, processes and logistics, as well as looking for funding and identifying partners to work with in Sri Lanka, Australia and elsewhere.

If you'd like to be involved or support this project in some way, please contact Steph by emailing steph@fermentcollaborate.org.
