HIGHER Education in China!
They had been praying and hoping for many years!
Finally,  this summer, Chinese teachers dedicated to Adventist education were able to meet together for the first time.  Over 60 teachers and principals from different provinces across China came together and were fed.

It was an exciting time as speakers from different countries came to encourage educators in China. This may not seem like exciting news to you, but imagine the joy felt when these educators realised they were not alone in holding fast to high ideals for Adventist education;  higher education in the truest sense.

Adventist teachers in China have chosen to forego prestige, affirmation and the financial security which comes with teaching in the formal educational system.  Why? They know that what matters most is the peace and fulfilment which comes from learning at the feet of Jesus and teaching others about His truths.

Who will put thoughts in to her head?
Historically, the Adventist church has put time and energy in to building schools, knowing it is important for the minds of our children to be inculcated with the Good News of salvation and the hope of Jesus' soon return.

In 6T 109.3, EGW writes, "The companies that are raised up need a place of worship. Schools are needed where Bible instruction may be given to the children.  The school room is needed just as much as is the church building.  The Lord has persons to engage in the work of establishing church schools as soon as something is done to prepare the way for them."

How important it is, at every level of education, for the molding and guiding of the thought processes of our young people to have a spiritual bent.  We need it for the children of today who will be our leaders for tomorrow.

In 1951, all of our schools (at least one college/seminary, dozens of academies, and over 100 elementary schools) were closed.  Today, the Chinese Union Mission has only about 1,380 students that are enrolled in schools with an Adventist influence -  in contrast with the 211 million students in public schools in China.

With revival at hand, let us pray for more and more opportunities to reach and educate young people according to His lesson plans.

Prayer Requests:

Kindergarten

Pray that our kindergarten teachers will connect for eternity with the parents of their students (most who are not Christian).

Grade School

Pray that teachers will have the material and creative skills to help students develop critical thinking necessary to choose right from wrong.

Highschool

Pray that our Adventist high school students will be granted recognised diplomas so that they can continue their studies.
Theological Training:
Did you know that leading our church in China, with its 411,981 members, are just 139 ordained pastors? (stats from Sept. 2012)

Most Pastors have difficulty in securing theological education of any sort since the government will not allow our church to set up an official seminary.  As such, most of our pastors have received short-term training as well as on-the-job training under the tutelage of experienced pastors.

Though a few of our pastors have received formal theological education outside of China, it is very difficult to obtain because of language barriers and financial constraints.

No doubt, one of the greatest needs we have in China is the need of systematic theological education.  Please keep this matter in your prayers!
