City Commons Starts Today!

City Commons is the VTL's inaugural placemaking event happening from July 11-14, 2013 and we want you to participate! Six projects initiated by community members in different neighbourhoods have been chosen for this event. Participants can drop by any project they find interesting and stay for as much time as they have to give. Any age and skill level welcome. The difference between a good place and a great place is whether you helped make it, so we encourage you to make a mark on your city! The following projects start on:

Thursday, July 11
Cascadia North Cooperative Cob Oven
Break bread with us! Help put together an outdoor oven using natural building materials like straw, clay, sand, and water.
Location: Kamloops Nisga’a Nation Office at St. David’s Church, 2475 Franklin Street.
When to drop in: 10am-12pm and 1pm-4pm from Thursday-Saturday

Mushboo UFARM Farm Raising UFARM stands for Urban Farming Art Research and Mycorenewal Center and will include community garden plots, urban farming research plots, bioremediation research and a seed/knowledge exchange hub.
Location: 5670 Blenheim Street (at 41st Avenue)
When to drop in: 9am-12pm Thursday, 9am-4pm Friday, 9am-12pm Saturday, and 9am-4pm Sunday

Saturday, July 13
Gather Round Street Painting and Block Party
Where the 10th Avenue Bikeway and the St. George Rainway meet is a newly established neighbourhood gathering point. Let’s splash some paint on the road and celebrate with a big block party!
Location: Intersection of 10th Avenue and St. George
When to drop in: On Saturday, the pancake breakfast starts at 11am, painting at 12, and block party at 5.

The Plot Thickens: Lakeview United Church Garden It’s a fixer-upper. This garden, designated for the promotion of food security and sovereignty within the low-income community in Kensington-Cedar Cottage, needs some work: a path, three compost bins, a small tool shed, and some other aesthetics.
Location: 2776 Semlin Drive (near 12th Avenue)
When to drop in: 9am-3pm Saturday

Sunday, July 14
Livable Laneways: Paths to Plazas What was once a community gathering spot for the Mt. Pleasant Bandstand to perform is now a parking lot. Help revive the good old days by finding new uses for the lot. Planter boxes and benches will surely brighten it up!
Location: EasyPark lot at Main and 7th
When to drop in: 10am-4pm Sunday

Southlands Farm Educational Fort/Theatre Join the Farm staff in the construction of an open air theatre & education shelter for the future Farm School, complete with green roof.
Location: 6767 Balaclava St.
When to drop in: On Sunday, we'll begin with coffee at 11am, building starts at 12pm, and there will be a campfire around 6 once that roof is raised!

More information is available on our program guide and Facebook page. If you can't make it to any of the builds, be sure to check out our evening events. Together, we'll explore Cottonwood Community Garden with a picnic and tour, go on a scavenger hunt around the city, and talk about greening our streets!
