En julio de 1969, la nave espacial Apollo 11 fue lanzada al espacio exterior. Su destino final, la Luna. Dos de sus tripulantes se convertirían en los primeros hombres en pisar este satélite, no obstante, un sinfín de teorías en contra han surgido negando la veracidad de este hecho histórico.

El mismo suceso, la llegada del hombre a la Luna, es el tema de Le voyage dans la Lune (1902), cortometraje de Georges Méliès y primera película de ficción jamás realizada. Inspirado en un cuento de Julio Verne, en este montaje declarado el desconocimiento absoluto sobre el comportamiento de los objetos y los seres humanos en la Luna –igualmente, una crisis de la representación– se muestran como una provechosa desventaja, ya que actúan como estímulo a la creatividad e imaginación.

La presente exposición se traza en el límite de la tensión provocada entre ambos momentos del mismo evento y desea explorar hasta cierto grado el encuentro estético, es decir, cómo reacciona el espectador frente a la incertidumbre provocada por un objeto o una situación. La producción de los artistas reunidos en esta selección se construye por medio de objetos e imágenes cuya función es indéxica; eliminan la primacía del objeto artístico como fuente inmediata de experiencia y relegan su presencia física a un segundo plano. Son una suerte de rastro de algo que quizás nunca tuvo lugar. Su estado es uno de suspensión, el cual oscila entre lo puramente documental y lo puramente ficticio.

A través de distintos formatos, los ocho artistas de la muestra ofrecen distintas consideraciones sobre las formas en que la apertura de un espacio estético conlleva la apertura de un espacio político.

En el marco de la exposición tendrá lugar la conferencia The Last Pictures, charla multimedia del artista Trevor Paglen derivada de una larga investigación en la que entrevistó a científicos, filósofos, antropólogos, artistas y demás especialistas sobre las profundas contradicciones que caracterizan a las civilizaciones contemporáneas.

Durante una residencia artística en el MIT, Paglen desarrolló en conjunto con científicos un disco micro-grabado, encapsulado en oro, con la capacidad de soportar las condiciones del espacio exterior durante miles de millones de años y de almacenar imágenes durante dicho tiempo. En septiembre 2012, el disco dejó la superficie terrestre adjunto a un satélite que lo colocará en la órbita cementerio. Las cien imágenes, elegidas a partir del largo proceso que emprendió para investigar lo que debería ser una marca cultural, están inspiradas por el cuestionamiento sobre la relación entre visión, conocimiento y poder, los límites y posibilidades del lenguaje, y por nuestra relación con la naturaleza y las maneras en que intentamos controlarla. Pensado para ser sobrevivir a la humanidad, The Last Pictures es un proyecto utópico que pretende explicar a alguien –en un futuro muy lejano– lo que era ésta y explorar el espacio no sólo como una frontera física sino una mental.

The Last Pictures fue comisionado por Creative Time, una organización sin fines de lucro con base en Nueva York.

In July 1969, the Apollo 11 space shuttle was launched to outer space. Its final destination, the Moon. Two of its crew members would become the first men to step foot on this satellite, however, an endless number of theories quickly emerged denying the veracity of this historic affair.

The same event, the human arrival to the Moon, serves as theme for Georges Méliès' short feature film Le voyage dans la lune (1902). Inspired on the same-titled short story by Jules Verne, this blatant montage –and first fiction film ever made– shows what a profitable disadvantage the complete ignorance of the behavior of objects and the human body on the Moon's surface was. This representation crisis certainly stimulated the imagination and creativity to depict how this new surrounding, a new reality, could be.

This exhibition is traced upon the limit of the tension provoked by both moments of the same event, and it wishes to explore to a certain degree the aesthetic encounter, that is, how a spectator reacts face to the uncertainty produced by an object or situation. The body of work of the featured artists is constructed through images and objects of an indexical nature; they tend to annihilate the primacy of the artwork as an immediate source of experience and relegate its physical presence to the background. The works brought together in this selection are a sort of trace of something that may have never taken place. They are suspended in a state oscillating between the purely documentary and the purely fictional.

Through different media, the eight summoned artists offer different propositions on how the opening of an aesthetic space involves the opening of a political one.

Framed under the theoretical umbrella of the exhibition, artist Trevor Paglen was invited to deliver his acclaimed lecture The Last Pictures. This multimedia presentation stems from a five year long research process in which Paglen interviewed scientists, philosophers, anthropologists, artists, and practitioners from other fields on the profound contradictions that shape contemporary civilizations.

During an artistic residence at MIT, and in joint efforts with its scientists, Paglen developed a micro-etched disk capable enough to endure the rough conditions of deep space during billions of years and to store images during that period of time. In September 2012, attached to a satellite that will place it in the cemetery orbit, the gilded disk was launched to outer space. The hundred images it contains, selected through the long process of inquiring on what a cultural mark should be, are inspired on then questioning of the relation between vision, knowledge and power; the limits and possibilities of language; and of our relationship to nature and the way in which we aim to control it. Designed and thought to outlast humanity, The Last Pictures is a utopian project that seeks to explain to someone –in the very distant future– what mankind was and to explore space not only as a physical frontier but a mental one.

The Last Pictures was commissioned by Creative Team, a non-profit organization based in New York.
