I painted these animals because I love them.

I live next to the ocean and have spent some time working out at sea. I consider it a privilege to experience these animals. They are so grand.

I was immediately drawn to the fundraising project because marine conservation is something I believe in and I deem very necessary. Painting a series like this has been somewhat of an undertaking, but a truly beautiful experience as well. Sharing space with these animals, physically, and in watercolour form, continues to be transformational.

I hope by sharing my renditions of these animals, it will remind of their existence, increase awareness, and contribute to conservation efforts.

Earth Tones :: painting with natural colours
All the sea mammals, and most of my other pieces, are painted with earth tones. The three pigments I use the most are Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, and Burnt Umber. I also mix reds and blues into other tones to get a variety of earthy colours:
There are many shades of earth greens. Here, I've mixed the earth tones Yellow Ochre (iii & v), Light Red Oxide (iv), Chromium Oxide Green (vi, vii, x, xi), Raw Sienna (ix), Burnt Sienna (xii), Burnt Umber (xiii), and Raw Umber (xv & xvi) with red and blues.

Pure Burnt Sienna creates the deepest rusty red (A). Raw Umber (B) and Burnt Umber (C) have darker hues, while Light Oxide Red (E) and Indian Red (F) have red-er pigmentation. I've mixed these earth tones with deep red, ochre, and phthalocyanine to get the other colours.
Many beautiful shades of violet can be found in nature. Mixing rusty earth tones such as Indian Red Hue (a) and Light Oxide Red (b) with phthalocyanine blue or ultramarine blue can create rich earth purples. I mixed deep red and alizarin crimson into other earth tones to get the rest.
Blues shades are created by mixing a variety of earth tones with Ultramarine (1, 2, & 3) and/ or Phthalocyanine (7 & 8).
Colour is important to me. Before I begin a painting, I plan out which colours I am going to use. I love working with earth tones - they keep me grounded, balanced, and excited about life!
animal: North Pacific Right Whale

The North Pacific Right Whale is extremely rare and endangered. We were just gifted with the presence of one off our coast a few weeks ago. It was the first sighting in 62 years! It is believed that fewer than 50 of these beauties exist today.

colour: green the colour of nature

Green is the colour of harmony, balance, and growth. Heart Chakra = love

It is also the colour of generosity, compassion, and both selfless and self love.

As a wood element in Feng Shui, it represents growth and health. Green's complimentary colour is magenta.
