June/July in photos
The g4g headquarters has never been quite so full! Our g4g team has grown this month with 4 new Interns in the office taking on their own projects from making experiment videos for our global experiments (coming to you soon and sneak previews available on Facebook), to an afterschool coding program as well as a visit to the Da Vinci Exposition.  So much going on!  Among all of this flurry of activities, we held a fundraising event on a beautiful sunny Sunday called the Summer Science Social,  signed an official partnership agreement with the International School of Brussels and have announced the dates to the next three greenlight for girls days in Brazil (13 – 16 August), Athens (12 October) and Brussels (16 November).   We have so much to look forward to and can't wait to tell you more! We hope you enjoy our summer Newsletter!
The Second Annual g4g day in Brazil!
The g4g team in Ouro Branco, Brazil is getting ready for more science fun this August.

We are excited to announce our second annual greenlight for girls day in Ouro Branco, Brazil this August! Our Country manager Kelly, has been working tirelessly with her team to put together this 4 day event!

From August 13 to 18, we have a full week of science fun waiting for our greenlight girls.  Our first day launches with an Astronomical observation using telescopes, inviting the whole town to participate.  Our g4g day events and classroom workshops will follow in the next 3 days working with the grirls from the Municipal, State and Private schools.

With 8 participating schools, 300 girls and a whole community involved, it will sure be a very exciting week.  Our Founder, Melissa Rancourt will be there to share her science knowledge and experience with the young Brazilian girls too. Judging by the lovely letters the girls wrote to her last year, we know they will be very happy to see her!

We cannot wait to get there and learn together with you!

Summer Science Social

The Belgian Royal Museum for Central Africa became our playground for the afternoon.

On a sunny Sunday afternoon on July 7th, the g4g team took over the inner courtyard of the beautiful Royal Museum for Central Africa to host our first Summer Science Social! We brought together the g4g community including our greenlight girls, their families and volunteers for a day filled with family fun concluding with an African Drum session all in the name of fundraising for g4g projects.

We would like to thank all involved in making this day happen including the Royal Museum for Central Africa, Mr Hofmam's
lsctraiteur Catering, our Tombola donors Serendip Spa including their new Yoga studio, Only great wines for their lovely wines, Sleeping in brussels and finally, Boston University Brussels for sponsoring the wonderful food!

a word from our interns....

Jef
f and Siqi from the Boston University Study Abroad program  tell us about their experiences working at g4g headquaters

My internship experience at g4g has been incredibly rewarding and enjoyable.  The fact that it is not a huge organization allows me to be really involved in the projects going on and to take initiatives. During the past few weeks working here, I have gained so many valuable professional experiences such as learning to write funding proposals and managing projects. My supervisor Nevena is very supportive and helpful. This is really important to me personally because it’s my first time working in a professional environment, and because of her easy-going personality, I am not afraid of asking questions or feedback. The casual office atmosphere here also appeals to me a lot. Because of my work, I also learned to make cupcakes (decorated in theme with our Summer Science Social) with the team and taste food from Spain, Greece, and other countries as we had an “international lunch day” on which all of us brought food representing our own countries. We simply have fun and enjoy our work.

I am very grateful for the help I have received and the opportunities I was given during the internship. I get to carry out my own ideas as an intern and because of that, my work becomes much more fulfilling and meaningful to me than it would have been. Working at a non-profit has always been my career goal and g4g really gives me an insight of how non-profits work and what growing a non-profit entails. Thank you g4g for this amazing experience!"

"My experience at greenlight for girls has been eye opening. I've had to experience and take on new challenges that I haven't faced before. However, a casual work environment has made handling these tasks easier and that's something I'm grateful for. It was great working with the other interns because I've never worked somewhere with people who were of a similar age and that helped me open up with my co-workers more than I have been able to in the past when most of my co-workers were at least ten years older than me. I enjoyed attending the Summer Social and being excited to see so many people supporting greenlight for girls, but it was also very exciting to see the result of my own work. It was fun working for an organization that had higher than to generate a profit and worked to better the world. I'll definitely remember this experience."
