“For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Warrior Pit taking shape

The Warrior Pit, located in the heart of SWU's Central campus, is nearing completion. The new outdoor recreation facility, located adjacent to the University Dining Commons, will greet students this fall with courts for basketball, sand volleyball and tennis. Adjacent to the courts are a firepit area and picnic shelter.

From the President

Dear SWU Community:

As you may have heard, SWU was not successful in our first attempt at gaining acceptance with the NCAA. Let me share that going into this, we knew that most schools take at least two attempts to get in, but even then there are no guarantees. However, we continue to be very confident regarding the strength of our application.

Second, the reasoning for their decision will be more clear after I get their response letter, but the items they specified on the phone were not overly difficult to shore up or clarify for the next round. One big one in particular will take care of itself: A concern that we were too close to the minimum number of sports (they did not feel comfortable counting our track and field and tennis programs this year until they are up and running).

Third, I shared with the NCAA that we are still "all in" and will continue to shape our program to be something that will instill pride.

In case you are asked questions about this, I have been sharing the following:

1)   This process is just that. A process. Most schools do not get in the first year of application, and while the NCAA was impressed with several aspects of the SWU application and readiness, they felt another year of preparation would be good.

2)   We remain committed to gain membership for the benefit of our student athletes and fans, to get back into South Carolina and North Carolina for athletic competition again. The NCAA option is the best one for SWU, and we are "all in" on working this process.

Thanks for your prayers as we push forward!

Todd Voss

Employees Recognition Dinner

Each year, our employees gather together to start off the new academic year, celebrate colleagues who have reached years of service milestones and welcome new faculty and staff. As previously announced, we’ll be having a Duck Dynasty-inspired theme. For those of you not familiar with this cultural phenomenon, you can find inspiration at www.aetv.com/duck-dynasty or www.duckcommander.com. You’re encouraged to incorporate some “camo” + “glam” into what you wear for this event. Individuals, offices or departments could have a lot of fun with this. Stay tuned to future editions of SWU News as we share more details.

This year’s dinner is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 13 and will be held in The Founders (University Dining Commons). Seating begins at 5:30 p.m. This gives everyone time to mingle and enjoy some appetizers. A dinner buffet featuring some of Miss Kay’s recipes starts at 6 p.m.

Please remember that this is a free event for adults; employees may bring a guest. RSVPs are now being taken at dfrost@swu.edu.  As you RSVP, remember to indicate if 1 or 2 are attending.
