Welcome to the August Edition of the Sunlight Chronicle!

August is National Breastfeeding Month!
Not surprisingly, we here at Sunlight Natural Health are strong advocates of breastfeeding and want to be a resource for you on this journey. We want to also acknowledge those dedicated and loving new mothers and babies who, for circumstances beyond anyone’s control, are unable to breastfeed their babies.

I have had the opportunity to experience both the rewards and challenges of breastfeeding going beautifully and the complete impossibility. Fortunately, here in the states we are blessed to have resources to find alternatives to nourish our babies despite the, perhaps unexpected, or less than ideal situations.

Things like breast pumping, finding suitable milk donors, and if all else fails healthier anti-allergenic milk formulations.  This is a huge world of information and unfortunately we cannot cover it all here.  But know that we are here for you and your questions when they arise.  And we are happy to share with you information that you and your babies need to be healthy, happy and wise.

Happy August and I hope this finds you enjoying your last hooray of summer as fall is just around the corner.

Best Regards,
Dr. Janene Martin
The Benefits of Breastfeeding

Kasia Kines, M.S., LDN, CNS, CN

Breast Feeding Benefits for Your Infant:

  • The quantity and quality of protein in breast milk is best suited for the newborn infant. Protein provides about 6-7% of the total energy in breast milk compared to 2l% in cow's milk and 9% in formula. Whey is the predominant protein in breast milk, which is more easily digested by the infant than casein, the predominant protein in cow's milk.
  • Numerous immunological factors in breast milk provide protection against gastroenteritis, respiratory infections, otitis media, some cancers, juvenile diabetes and allergic reactions. For infants with a strong family history of allergies, breastfeeding is an important preventive measure against allergies.
  • Protection against iron deficiency anemia is greater than that from cow's milk or a non-iron-fortified formula. While the iron content of breast milk is lower than cow's milk, it is better absorbed (50% versus 10%, respectively). The high lactose and vitamin C content of breast milk contributes to the increased absorption of iron.
  • Breast milk contains lower levels of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, potassium and protein than cow's milk. This lower renal solute load helps to prevent dehydration.
  • Essential fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in breast milk promote brain development and visual acuity.
  • Human milk lipase contributes to the digestion and absorption of fats. Most of the fat (85-90%) in breast milk is absorbed. Absorption of fat from cow's milk can be lower than 70% for many infants.
  • Lactase in breast milk increases the absorption of lactose. The large quantity of lactose in breast milk contributes to the development of the central nervous system and intestinal flora.
  • Breast milk amylase aids in the digestion of starch.

  • Reduced risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
  • No risk of overfeeding.

  • Promotes good jaw and tooth development.

  • Fosters the development of a strong maternal-infant bond.

Breast Feeding Benefits for the Mother:

  • Convenient and easier than formula preparation. Breast milk is always at the right temperature and hygienic. This is a great advantage for travelling mothers.
  • Significantly cheaper than formula. Costs only the price of a few extra groceries for the mother.
  • Saves hours of formula buying and preparation. No worries about the correct dilution or a clean water supply.
  • Quicker and easier to return to pre-pregnancy weight and the normal shape of the uterus.
  • May increase the mother's sense of well being due to higher levels of prolactin secreted while nursing.
  • May be protective against breast and ovarian cancer and "these benefits increase with increased exclusiveness of breastfeeding during the first 6 months of life, and thereafter with increased duration of breastfeeding" (WHO/LINICEF).
  • Helps to decrease postpartum bleeding.

Grilled Citrus Chicken Salad
By Wellness Mama

A light and fruity chicken salad that can be made on the go. This salad is a reminder of summer, even when there is snow on the ground. I often make a salad like this for lunch at least a few times a week. Pick your own homemade dressing, or just squeeze a lemon or orange over for a dressing.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 (or more for leftovers) large chicken breasts (or 4 thighs)
  • 1 orange, lime or lemon
  •  Spices
  • 1 Chopped cucumber
  • 1 apple, peeled, sliced and chopped
  • 1/2 cup slice strawberries (optional)
  • 2 or more hardboiled eggs
  • lettuce or spinach for salad
  • homemade dressing of your choice

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Bake chicken in oven for approx 1 hour (or slice and pan fry) with sliced orange, lemon or lime and spices on top (salt, pepper, cilantro, garlic, etc) or just sprinkle some lemon juice on for flavor
  2. Hard boil 2 (or more for leftovers) eggs and let cool
  3. Prepare lettuce or spinach in bowls
  4. Chop cucumber, apple and other veggies if desired and put on lettuce
  5. Prepare homemade dressing of choice (last week’s meal plan has these)
  6. When chicken is done, slice or cube and put on top of salad
  7. Top with dressing
