New Research Translation Coordinator
Kelli Palmer is the new Research Translation Coordinator for the LSU SRP. Kelli recently received a Master of Arts in Mass Communication and will help the LSU Superfund Research Center in communicating research findings to a variety of audiences. |

Betsy Paille is the new Community Engagement Coordinator for the LSU SRP. Betsy received a Master of Science in Environmental Science from LSU. Her area of expertise is comprehensive planning and community outreach.

Breaking Through Barriers Workshop
LSU SRP Community Engagement and Research Translation Core coordinators Betsy Paille and Kelli Palmer attended Breaking through Barriers, a science communication workshop on environmental communication with African Americans, Vietnamese, and Hispanics. These audiences often face disproportionate barriers to accessing and utilizing environmental information. The workshop is a part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve Systems Coastal Training Program. It was led by Eric Eckl of Water Words That Work at Alabama’s Delta Resource Center in Spanish Fort, Alabama. The workshop focused on developing culturally sensitive and targeted outreach efforts to diverse audiences, ways to improve multicultural outreach, and also different ways to reach out to audiences for whom English is a second language. NanoHUB Visits LSU Superfund Research Center
 The LSU Superfund Research Program hosted Dr. Tanya Feltens and Dr. Lynn Zentner of nanoHUB to discuss possible collaborations with the SRP and LSU and to learn more about LSU's nano-related research, education, and outreach. NanoHUB.org is an online resource for nanoscience and nanotechnology geared toward educational applications, professional networking, and interactive simulation tools for nanotechnology. Dr. Feltens and Dr. Zentner toured LSU's Center for Advanced Microstructures and Devices (CAMD) with Dr. Richard Kurt, Interim Director. CAMD is a synchrotron radiation research center utilized by LSU SRP researchers for characterization of nanoparticles.
Nano-4-Rem Workshop
 On June 5-6, members of the LSU Superfund Research Program attended the Nano- 4- Rem workshop at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La. The inaugural workshop focused on understanding and meeting information and technology needs to prevent exposures to engineered nanoparticles. The workshop provided a chance for representatives from the environmental remediation community, industry, academia, and government to share thoughts and ideas on work practices that support nano enabled environmental remediation and also gave participants an opportunity to become acquainted with other nanotechnology stakeholders. 13th Annual PIC Congress on Combustion By-Products and Their Health Effects
 The 13th Annual International Congress on Combustion By- Products and Their Health Effects took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, on May 15-18, 2013. Six plenary sessions covered health effects of emissions, environmental fate of pollutants from combustion sources, environmental sampling technologies, and mechanisms of toxicology of pollutants from combustion sources. LSU SRP scientists played a key role in the meeting: LSU SRP Project Dr. Barry Dellinger is the Executive Committee Chair of the Congress, Dr. Stephania Cormier headed up the local organizing committee, and LSU SRP researchers and trainees presented during oral and poster sessions. LSU SRP Researcher Awarded Post Doctoral Travel Award
 Dr. Gin Chuang, an LSU Superfund Research Center postdoctoral researcher working with Dr. Kurt Varner at the LSU Health Sciences Center, was awarded the Postdoctoral Travel Award by the Cardiovascular Toxicology Specialty Section at the Society of Toxicology Meeting held in March. The title of Gin’s presentation was “Mitochondria and intrinsic apoptotic pathway mediate cardiac toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals”.
