Isolated Believers in Indonesia Get Spiritual Support

When you hear about the plight of Christians being persecuted for their faith somewhere in the world today, you probably don’t think of a vast island chain in Southeast Asia.

The fact is, however, that there are millions of Christians in Indonesia, and many of them live under the daily threat of intimidation and violence. The government’s official policy is religious tolerance, but militant groups have been on the rise in recent years.

TWR has been serving in Indonesia since 2000, reaching out to nonbelievers but also providing the only desperately needed spiritual resources available to many isolated believers. To keep this crucial ministry operating and spur its growth, we need your help raising $72,400. Learn more about the Life-Changing Media for Indonesia project.

Woman Who Was Hostage Emphasizes Grace

Gracia Burnham knows a lot better than most of us how important a grace period can be.

For Gracia, it means far more than saving interest on a credit-card bill or not having to pay a fine for an overdue library book. She talks a lot about this subject because God allowed her a “day of grace” when she was freed after being held more than a year by separatist guerrillas in the Philippines. Her husband, Martin, died in the rescue attempt.

In the years since, Gracia has shared her story with a wide reading and listening public, and she has looked for ways to reach surviving guerrillas back in the country where she served as a missionary and tell them about the eternity that her Heavenly Father still stands ready to grant them. They still have a day of grace in which to seek salvation.

“What I do know is our day of grace is not over either,” she told the staff during a presentation at TWR’s Cary, N.C., headquarters. “We have today. And we can do whatever we want to with today.”

Recruits Mobilizing to Serve at Transmitter Site

Finally, the stretched-thin contingent of missionary broadcasters on the Pacific island of Guam can start looking forward to relief.

The cavalry, in the form of badly needed engineering and information technology personnel, is headed for TWR’s powerful shortwave transmitting center, which sends gospel programming to millions in China, North Korea and elsewhere across Asia. Two couples and a young man recently graduated from college have been appointed by TWR and are eagerly engaged in raising financial support to begin their ministry on the other side of the planet.

Grant and Jenna Hodgins of Greensboro, N.C., and their children, Matthew and Rachel, are hoping to make the move soon to Guam, where Grant will help maintain the computer network. The engineering staff will get a boost when Mike and Wendy Lambert of Gurnee, Ill., and Andrew Orton of Cary, N.C., eventually arrive on the island.  The Lamberts have three sons – Zach, Max and Jack – and Orton served an internship at TWR’s transmitter site on Bonaire in the Caribbean.

All the appointees are ready to dive into their new assignments, but first they have to build teams of believers who will commit to support them in prayer and finances. If you or your church feels led by God to join one or more of these support teams, please see the appointees’ Web pages, linked to above.

TWR's Ministry Receives Television Coverage

TWR’s president, Lauren Libby, uses Twitter like a pro and is a veteran practitioner of both ham and broadcast radio – so what is he doing on television?

Mostly, telling about the potential of TWR to send the gospel into far-flung spots across the globe through powerful radio signals and a growing variety of media. WRAL, the local CBS affiliate in Raleigh, N.C., recently sent a reporter to the next-door town of Cary to learn more about what this worldwide media organization really does.

You can view Lauren’s comments, along with those of other TWR staff members, in this upbeat televised report here.

Listener Response: Ready to Take Next Step

A listener in India sent this letter after hearing TWR broadcasts:

I have been religious from childhood, but all my rituals and practices turned to naught. I have always hated followers of Jesus Christ because I used to think they come from the backward classes. One day I was listening to the radio and playing with the radio dial knob when suddenly I heard some strange teachings. I listened carefully and liked the message so much that the next day I tuned into the same station again. Slowly my views about Jesus changed. Now in my heart I believe Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior. Please pray for me that one day I may truly accept him openly.
