Tech-Girl Monthly: August 2013

Check out all the creative making from camps this summer!
Video Game Design  |  Create a Website
In yet another article about the "massive talent shortage globally" of computer programmers, Creative Collective CEO Yvette Adams says that "coding is deeply creative and about problem solving", but often adults "think coding is really intimidating and kids can’t do it." When we hear about the shortages of students studying science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) subjects, it is often correlated with the assumption that these subjects are just too difficult.
I don't really believe it, except for maybe that we start too late and expect too much in an effort to play catch up. This summer we found that video game design and web making are both great ways to tap into the creative and problem solving nature of coding. How do you create and problem solve with code? Please share with us.

Many thanks to Computers4Kids, Light House Studio, Charlottesville City Schools and Albemarle County Public Schools for supporting the web maker & video game design camps!
The summer was great fun for Tech-Girls and we want to keep the momentum going into the new school year, but we need your help!
  • Women in Tech Panel: A new study shows that local women in tech role models are hugely important to local girls interest in studying STEM. We want to celebrate the International Day of the Girl on October 11 by hosting a Women in Tech panel to highlight local role models.
  • Tech-Girls Webfest: This event would bring girls together with local entrepreneurs, non-profits and mentors for a day of making websites. Tech-Girls have been learning HTML & CSS, the building blocks of websites, as well as website design. They will bring these skills to this day of helping others establish a presence on the web.
Please contact us if you are interested in participating in either of these events this Fall.
