Fierce Ink Press is proud to sponsor a panel on the new face of publishing at Confederation Centre Public Library at 6:30 until 8pm on Tuesday, August 20th. The publishing industry is changing daily, and for a writer it can be tricky waters to navigate. The panelists hope to shed some light on the evolving industry and answer any questions that writers may have.
The panel consist of award-winning young adult author Patti Larsen, freelance editor Annetta Ribken, graphic designer Christina Gaudet and Fierce Ink Press publishing executive Colleen McKie. With such a diverse panel, all elements of the publishing industry will be covered.
“It's a great opportunity for anyone curious about publishing,” says McKie. “It's not often that you get four people, all working in different aspect of the industry, in the same room. Potential authors have a chance to get the inside scoop on everything from writing to editing to cover design to working with a publisher.”
The panel is free and opened to the general public. There will also be the opportunity to purchase books written or published by the panelists.

Patti Larsen
Patti is an award winning young adult author with a passion for the paranormal. Now with multiple series in happy publication, she lives by choice on Prince Edward Island with her very patient husband and five massive cats.
Annetta Ribken
Freelance editor of over eighty novels, Annetta has been writing since letters were chiseled on stone tablets. She specializes in content editing and working with indie writers. She lives and works just outside of St. Louis with her evil feline overlord, a rescued shelter cat named Athena.
Christina G Gaudet
Christina has been a graphic designer for seven years. Her work includes print ads, posters, and book covers. When not designing, she spends her time illustrating books and comics and writing young adult fiction.
Colleen McKie
Colleen runs Fierce Ink Press with her business partner Kimberly Walsh. Before starting Fierce Ink Colleen was a book blogger for four years. When not working on books or reading books or thinking about books she's busy taking care of the zillion of animals that own her.
2) Art in the Open Back for a Third Year
The parks around downtown Charlottetown will soon set the stage once again for a contemporary art festival. Art in the Open will celebrate its third year and will feature artists from across the country.
The free arts festival, taking place August 24 from 4 p.m. to midnight, will highlight the Island’s diverse visual art scene, downtown heritage spaces, exhibition venues and diverse cultural traditions, as well as the beauty and history of the downtown’s public squares and parks. More than 35 exhibits will be presented, including interactive and experimental pieces, live performances, community initiatives, collaborations and much more. There will be something for everyone to enjoy.
As a way to give back to the community, the public is encouraged to participate in the March of Crows on the day of the festival. There will be a free costume-making workshop on August 21 from 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m. in the Schurman Family Studio at the Confederation Centre of the Arts.
Another exciting exhibit this year will be a collaboration between an Island artist and and off-Island artist. The this town is small residency is a knowledge-sharing initiative. This year’s mentor is Will Robinson from Halifax, NS and the jury-selected Island artist who will be working with Robinson is Donnalee Downe, from Charlottetown.
The festival will also celebrate the Island’s Mi’kmaq community with a presentation from the Lennox Island group New Generation Singers who will showcase traditional Mi’kmaq drumming, singing and dancing from 7:40 to 8:30pm in the front field of Victoria Park. Mi’Kmaq artist Ursula A. Johnson (NS) will perform a dynamic storytelling of a legend of the raven in Salamander clearing at 8:30 pm.
Art in the Open co-coordinator, Becka Viau, said this year’s lineup is a presentation of top-notch contemporary art from many different artists from the Island and across Canada. “Art in the Open brings contemporary art out of the gallery and into unconventional public spaces. This festival brings art to the people. With over thirty exhibits and performances to encounter this festival is sure to inspire.”
3) Bonshaw Ceilidh Aug 25
The monthly Ceilidh Concert at the beautiful Bonshaw Hall will be Sunday, August 25th from 7-9 pm. Featuring special guests including: harpist Lana Quinn with guitarist Byron Olsen, fiddler Matthew Reid, dancer Zoe Cox, celtic duo Colin Jeffrey and Cathie Ott, and singer Ron Kelly, plus local musicians. There's a 50/50 draw, delicious biscuits for lunch, and open stage time. Admission is by donation with proceeds this month going to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. Everyone welcome. Wheelchair accessible. Seat cushion is recommended.

5) Period of PURPLE Crying Program
Period of PURPLE Crying Program ® - purple infant hats still needed at QEH! The Period of PURPLE Crying program teaches families and caregivers about the normal patterns of infant crying. This teaching has been proven to help prevent infant abuse and injuries due to shaking.
If You Knit or Crochet: To help create awareness of the program a purple hat will be given to every baby born on PEI over the first year of the Period of PURPLE Crying program. Hats are still needed at QEH! Any shade of purple yarn is fine. Any infant hat pattern can be used. Additional patterns can be found at: http://clickforbabies.org. Hats that are knitted or crocheted can be given to the QEH maternity unit or volunteer services offices, with a note “for the Period of PURPLE Crying Babies.”

World Day for Cultural Diversity May 21 Online Video Contest

Participating in the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” video contest of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) means that you have agreed to all of the rules and regulation. For promotional and educational purposes we will be using the selected videos on diverse platforms for the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” campaign as well as include them on the PLURAL + Youth Video Festival DVD.
The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in partnership with UNESCO and various other partners from corporations to civil society is launching “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” campaign aimed at engaging people around the world to Do One Thing to support Cultural Diversity and Inclusion.
Following the adoption in 2001 of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity, the UN General Assembly declared May 21 as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development. This day raises awareness on the richness of world cultures and the opportunities that cultural diversity can bring to societies.
As part of the “Do One Thing for Diversity and Inclusion” 2013 campaign, we are organizing a video contest. The winning videos will be included within the UNAOC Plural + Youth Video Festival DVD. http://pluralplus.unaoc.org

8) [PAR-L] Looking for inspiring Everyday Political Citizens
Hi everyone, my name is Jane Hilderman. I'm a new-ish member of the Policy Action Research (PAR-L) forum and also research manager at Samara, a non-partisan think-tank dedicated to increasing political engagement in Canada.
This summer Samara launched The Everyday Political Citizen project, an online space that highlights the unsung heroes of Canadian democracy- all the door-knockers, petition-signers, community leaders, candidates and rabble- rousers who work through political systems that are often frustrating, non-responsive and downright confusing in order to change policies and build a better country. We're writing to ask for your nominations.
But first, why are we doing this?
In our research with politically underrepresented communities, one point we heard over and over is that people lack political role models. Many don't want to get involved because they feel that there is no one "like them" in the political world. Even if they want to get involved, without political role models they don't know how.
So, we're working to find at least 308 role models-one from each federal riding across Canada. We also know that young women have their own struggle finding positive role models in politics, so we are working hard to make sure women are represented in this space. Currently 26% of nominees and 30% of nominators are women. We'd love your help in bringing those numbers up.

9) The Ultimate Girls’ Night Out! is ours!
The Board and staff of PEIBWA are thrilled that we are taking over the Ultimate Girls Night Out! from the Charlottetown Chamber of Commerce as our signature fundraising event. This year’s theme, Diamonds Are Forever, reflects what we know about our members: we are strong, practical and brilliant. The theme also evokes the glamour era of the late 60s/ early 70s and sets the stage for a sparkling evening.
Funds raised from this high profile sell-out evening will be used to expand the programming and services offered by PEIBWA across the Island, including business advisory services for members and skills development training in rural areas.
The Ultimate Girls Night Out! will include a cocktail reception and a sumptuous three-course dinner at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel on October 4 2013, with a reverse-draw for exciting prizes throughout the evening as well as musical entertainment, wine, and of course lots of fun.
