Zoe comes home, Christopher goes to Colombia, Asher makes a big decision, and we all pack up to leave Oxford!
Hays Missions Update
Preparing to Provide Transformational Theological Education to Latin American Pastors and Theologians

United World Mission

Dear Friends and Family,

It's been a turbulent few months for us, but we have received an enormous amount of mercy from God and his people, and have lots of good news to report.

First, we are delighted to say that Zoe is safely home from the hospital. She is healthy and happy and it doesn't seem that there will be any long term damage from her frightening seizures last month. We were flooded with prayers, meals, and help with our boys during Zoe's hospitalization and recovery, and Michelle and I feel deeply blessed and honored to have such an enormous community of friends caring for us.  Thank you!

Immediately after Zoe was released from the hospital, I left my family in the capable hands of our Oxford community and hurried off to salvage my planned trips. I caught the tail-end of a CMS missions training event (CMS is our UK-based mission agency), which was a marvelous delight. It enhanced my enthusiasm for our UWM mission training in September/October, and gave we a wonderful chance to connect with a wide range of splendid missionaries at CMS.

From the CMS event I flew straight to Medellín (well, I didn't make my connection, so I arrived a day later than planned). The brevity of my trip to Colombia notwithstanding, it was a tremendous success. Thanks in large part to the expert help of my future colleagues at the Biblical Seminary of Colombia, I was able to make decisions about the boys' schooling, line up housing, get my teaching schedule for 2014, sign my contract with the seminary, get much of the documentation I need for our visas, AND have a slew of meetings about the new masters program in theology we're developing in partnership with Fuller Theological Seminary. On top of all that, I had lots of meals and times to connect with old friends and future colleagues. I came home feeling absolutely wired about our new life in Medellín, as I can really see all the pieces fitting together.

We are also delighted to share that, amidst the uncertainty of our transition, Asher has decided to commit his life to Christ. He's actually been eager to "become a Christian" for a long time, and we've rather delayed him to make sure that he understands something of the nature of Jesus' work for him. But as we move away from England and shift to the US and then to Colombia, we are delighted that our second son has decided to "follow God's plan for his life"!

Now we're rapidly wrapping up our lives here in Oxford, packing the house up, and saying good-bye to our old friends and the beautiful community we've had here.  On the 30th, we say good-bye to the UK, closing a marvelous chapter on our lives.

Peace be with you all,

Christopher, Michelle, Judah, Asher, and Zoe Hays

From Michelle

Thank you to all of you who were praying for us last month when Zoe was in the hospital for seizures. We had her last follow-up appointment at the hospital clinic this week and she seems to be perfectly healthy now (the second set of EEG results were normal - praise God!). I was so blessed to have friends from our church and our community caring for the boys, Zoe, and me while Chris was away in Colombia. We are relieved and grateful to see Zoe playing and acting like her sweet self again. August was a busy month with Zoe's hospital stay, Chris' trip to Colombia, Asher's birthday at Legoland, a goodbye party for both of the boys with their school classmates, Chris' birthday, and the general craziness of packing up our house and saying our goodbyes to friends in the Oxford community. When we moved to Oxford from Germany, Chris and I really hoped that these three years in England would be a time of stability and growth for our family and that God would use these years to prepare us further for His work in Latin America. Almost all of the items we are packing into boxes right now hold special memories of how God has been faithful to our family over the course of many moves. I'm sure that there will continue to be some areas of uncertainty and difficulty ahead as we seek to begin a new adventure serving God in Colombia - but I hope that as we unpack, we will be reminded again of God's faithfulness through it all.

Praise God

  • For Zoe's safe recovery!
  • For Asher's decision to accept Jesus as his Lord!
  • For the lightening-fast rate at which things have come together for us at the Biblical Seminary of Colombia. The contrast to the slow and arduous years we had trying to cobble together plans for work in Buenos Aires seems to speak volumes about God's blessing on this new direction.
  • For wonderful progress in fund-raising. Thanks to the lower cost of living in Colombia and some new supporters, we have now raised 80% of the annual support we'll need to work in Medellín. We're closing in on our target!
  • For the training and education I've received during the past seven years in Europe. I feel so fortunate to have received such extensive preparation for our vocation, and want very much to honor the resources that have been entrusted to us. We want to express our gratitude to all of you who have encouraged and supported us since we started my doctoral studies in 2006, since you were thinking strategically and long-term about how we (all together!) might best serve the Church in Latin America.
  • For an exquisite three years in Oxford. These have been the happiest years of my life, and I feel magnificently blessed and fortunate to see the myriad of kindnesses God has given me, in my family, my friends, my work, and my calling.

Please Pray

  • For our family's peace as we undertake this major move back to the US for three months of training, preparation, and fund-raising, before our final departure to Colombia. We all feel a great deal of sadness to leave our wonderful lives in England, and have some bits of anxiety about the "reverse culture shock" that likely awaits us!
  • For our training in North Carolina, which will begin in mid-September. Please pray for the kids to make friends quickly and for us all to be in the right place emotionally so that we can benefit optimally from this time.
  • For the final 20% of our missionary funding to come in quickly!
  • For us to experience great joy and excitement, alongside the sadness of our move.
  • For traveling mercies.
