NNECL NEWS - Issue 1

Working together to transform the progression of young people in or leaving care into and through further and higher education

We are delighted to announce the first of a series of quarterly newsletters from the National Network for the Education of Care Leavers.

The Network was established in June 2013 by higher education institutions and national organisations committed to the progression and support of care leavers in higher education.

The newsletter has been put together by the National Strategic Group.  You can find out more about what NNECL and the National Strategic Group here.

The National Strategic Group

In order to progress the aims of NNECL a group of regional representatives meet on a quarterly basis to take forward tasks for the Network.

So far the group has met twice and has been working on producing an introductory guide for designated care leaver workers, organising the December conference and producing this newsletter.

If you think of something which you would like the National group to work on - whether it's a problem you regularly face, a policy issue you think we should lobby on or an idea for something that would make lives easier for your colleagues across the sector, then please let your regional representative know.

Your regional representatives

North East - Megan Lunn
North West - Arron Pile
Yorkshire and Humber - Ian Brown
West Midlands - Kirsty Jones/Baljit Gill
East Midlands - Jenny Dunstall/Melissa Page
East of England - Lee Byrne
South West England - Di Stone
South East England - Felicity Dunworth

Save the date

The first NNECL National Group annual event will take place on 11 December 2013 kindly hosted by Manchester Metropolitan University.

Attendance is encouraged from anyone working in a higher education institutions with responsibility for supporting care leavers - although due to limited space there will be one space per organisation.  A waiting list will operate in case more spaces are available.

The meeting will include guest speakers, a chance to share best practice and discuss the thorny issues facing us across the sector and think about how we can work together to improve outcomes for care leavers.

You can register your interest in attending the meeting by emailing Megan Lunn (care.contact@sunderland.ac.uk)
