Move well.    Breathe well.    Be well.

"When it's over, I want to say: all my life I was a bride married to amazement." - Mary Oliver

A shorter one.

What a glorious summer we've been having in Vancouver! I don't want to keep you from it, so I will keep this newsletter brief.

If you happened to take a Hatha or Yin class with me at South Granville YYoga in early July and you are interested in the Vision Book project that I mentioned, you can find the project outlined here.

I hope the month of August brings your many slow moments surrounded by loved ones, tall trees, and sunshine.

Love,
Sarah

Summer Yoga Experiment:
Facebook Free Weekends

If you follow Sarah Jamieson Yoga on Facebook, you may have already read about my Facebook free weekends. If not, the experiment is this: take a minimum 48-hour break from Facebook each weekend for the entire summer season.

It has been an interesting process so far, and I've taken the time to reflect on one aspect of the experiment in this blog post

Taking Care

What would it mean to always leave a place
in better condition than you found it?

The documentary No Impact Man follows Colin Beavan and his family through their year-long experiment living a zero-waste lifestyle in New York City. One thing the film touched upon – that has also been coming up in conversations I've been having with friends recently – is the idea of focusing on making a positive impact on the planet.

When all of our focus is on not polluting or not wasting, it is easy to lose track of the ways we can make things better. A friend who does a lot of hiking put it simply:

"Instead of just picking up garbage in the woods, I could plant trees!"

The next time you are about to leave a communal space ask yourself: What could I do right now to leave this place in better condition than it was when I arrived?

And then, try to take the time to do it.

PS – If you are interested in watching No Impact Man, check to see if your local library has a copy. If they don't, you can suggest that they purchase it. That's how I got my hands on a copy!
Recommended Read
I read a lot of non-fiction because I love to learn. I used to sometimes feel like I was missing out on an opportunity to learn if I was reading fiction. But then, a few years ago, I learned that reading fiction can help develop one's ability to be empathetic, so I came to see more value in fiction and I started carving out fiction-reading times – specifically, vacations and holidays.

I read The Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins over the Winter holidays a couple years ago, and these books were a ton of fun. I had a hard time putting them down! If you are looking for an engaging, quick, and mildly thought-provoking summer read, check out these books.

Learn About Love

This article has a classic catchy title: 10 things you might not know about love.

More often than not, I find articles with titles like this one are a waste of my time. This article is an anomaly.

Love, in our culture, is often thought of as something reserved for a few special people in our lives. It is private; it is intimate; it is exclusive.

The science challenges that.

Read the article to find out why.

Life Lessons

If you read my post on Facebook Free Weekends, you know I have a tendency to get curious online. After swamping through all of the articles that I do, here is one post that I consider to be "cream of the crop" life advice:
