Summer Doldrums?  NYET!

Radio Shows and Relationships are FLOWERING

NEW SCIENCE SHOWS from With Good Reason and BackStory (from The History Guys, more about them later), PLUS an open door to NHK -- Nippon Hoso Kokai, the national public broadcasting organization of Japan -- may lead to Radio Newark being named as The Greatest Radio Station EVER!  (Come on -- DREAM with me :-)

(DOPE SLAP HERE.)  Hey, I forgot to tell you that some of our programs and hosts WON SIGNIFICANT AWARDS.  Really.  "Big Deal" awards -- like the National Humanities Medal, presented by President Obama himself on behalf of the National Endowment for the Humanities.  (Details follow.)

PLUS a genius dropped out of the sky (and into our studio), our website will be a complete train wreck from time to time as we upgrade, and "Baby needs a new broadcast microphone."
ALSO, an update on our FM radio application.

BUT MOST OF ALL --- THANK YOU.  Thank you very much.  Thank you for your feedback, your input, the care and concern you demonstrate for this radio station.  Really, it is an honor to have you with us.  Thank you for CARING.

Now -- let's get to it!

NTD China News Gone - Radio Japan To Replace?

We lost China News from NTD-TV about eight weeks ago due to a programming change.  (They no longer produce the show.)  We still carry the news from China Radio International, but wanted another viewpoint on news from Asia.  Now, we haven't signed a formal agreement yet, but we are working towards an agreement with NHK in Japan to carry their international news summaries.  THIS will be GREAT ADDITION to our programming.  Listen for Radio Japan's news segments beginning this month.

What was that about an AWARD?

Right.  And it was a BIG one.

Dr. Edward Ayers, the 19th century American History Guy on BackStory radio, was awarded a National Humanities Medal by President Obama on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.  Backstory is a production of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, which we found through our membership in the Public Radio Exchange, PRX.  Backstory covers ALL SORTS of history, including the history of discoveries, inventions, and science, which is what WE are all about.  Backstory paints a vibrant picture, with rich backgrounds, that puts you on the scene, speaking directly with the inventor.  Fabulous audio production, of course!  But engaging at a human level, not just the intellectual.  Backstory is some of the very best radio you'll find.  It is a privilege to bring their stories to you.  Congratulations, Edward!

We're also pulling stories from With Good Reason, whose producer told me that sixty-percent of their shows deal with science, education, or technology.  With Good Reason is supported by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities as well.  They must know what the heck they're doing over there!

Outgoing Radio Station Seeks Broadcast Microphone For Long-Term Relationship

This is one of those times when spending a little more money makes a lot of sense.

We need a good broadcast microphone.  Many of the PRX segments we air require a intro, outro, or both.  We're using a mic borrowed from a friend to record them.  "As long as you need it," he said, but it bugs me that we don't have one of our own.

C'mon, what radio station doesn't have its own microphone?!?  :-)

An Electro-Voice RE-20.  It costs $449 from  Sweetwater Sound.  You're wondering where that PayPal link is, right?  BOOM!  Problem solved.

This is a microphone we are going to use for many, many years.  Your financial gift makes it possible.  THANK YOU VERY MUCH.  You are giving us a tool that we will use every day for years and years and years.  THANK YOU for your gift.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Roger Crombie

Through the extended kindness of Catastrophe Risk Exchange and Mr. Frank Fortunato, specifically, we joyously introduce Mr. Roger Crombie, FCA, MCMI, FFA, an erudite yet hilarious broadcaster.  His brilliant / insightful / funny / honest columns written for CATEX News are the fizz enlivening an already splendid newsletter.

(Let me decipher this a bit.  Crombie is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, a Member of the Chartered Management Institute and a Fellow of the Institute of Financial Accountants.  Man knows finances. And broadcasting.  AND humor.  What a great combo!)

Roger puts his finger on the center of the matter and tickles it.  Makes you see the problem clearly, while offering insight into dimensions you could not know.  A genius of a man, and humble -- offering to us a lifetime of experience, world-class intellect, delightful storytelling, and a voice that you will love as soon as you hear him, right here, on Radio Newark.  SOON!

FM Radio Station Update

Truly grateful, with a side order of giddiness, describes the feeling I have for the way you responded to our financial need.  In order to complete our license application we needed an experienced broadcast engineer.  By $10 and $20 and $50 and $100 (even more!) YOU MET OUR NEED of $2350 to fund the engineering expenses.  That money is now in the hands of a very capable engineer who, by email last week, told me the terrain and RF analysis software has been ordered and two of his deputies are working on the initial tasks.  Yeehah!  As soon as we have a proposed frequency, I'll pass that information along.  The Filing Window is OCTOBER 15th TO THE 29th.  Keep praying!

DANGER!  Software Upgrade Ahead!

Oh, brother.  We need to upgrade our website framework.  But the bad news is that  there is NO UPGRADE PATH!  We have to erect the new framework and rebuild each page of the website.  THEN we can begin to take advantage of all of the new features and functionality.  Woof.

Bottom line -- when we are working on the new version, it WILL look like a real mess. So please be patient as we upgrade.  It'll be better when we're done.

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!

So many people have helped Radio Newark!  Producers, newscasters, writers, audio engineers, broadcast engineers, administrative assistants, listeners and donors around the world have all had a hand in our success.  Thank you dear friends -- your help has built this station.

I am truly grateful for your encouragement, notes, email, phone calls and financial support, too.  Certainly, we would not be here if it weren't for YOU.

Talk to you soon.  All the best from Delaware,

Steve

PS -- No, it's not too late to give.  We really do need a broadcast microphone (like the Electro Voice RE-20 above) at the studio.  If you want to join our growing team, here's that link again.(!)
