Dear friends and colleagues,

Hope all are doing well. This will be a quick newsletter with only a few announcements as we’re knee-deep getting two new HIAs started (one on a roadway extension project in Albuquerque, New Mexico and one on a new statewide school funding formula in California) and we just wrapped up our Long Beach Housing Element HIA (check out our website soon for this one).

First, HIP’s blog has had some more frequent posts this month. Our summer intern, Jonathan Szkup-Valdez (who’s with us after completing his freshman year in college), is writing about his impressions of the social determinants of health, and how these issues relate to his neighborhood of East Oakland. Check out the posts at From the HIP! A few of our recent posts include:

Jonathan SV is also leading a campaign to increase HIP’s presence on Facebook – if you haven’t had a chance to "like" us yet, please do.

Announcements

  • NACCHO HIA Mentorship Project: Request for Applications (RFA) Announcement: The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is seeking both HIA mentor and mentee applicants for a HIA Mentorship Project. Local health departments supported under the project will receive peer-to-peer assistance and technical support to conduct a HIA. Applications are due August 9th (mentors) and 16th (mentees). For more information, please visit the NACCHO website.
  • Reviewing HIA Graduate Courses: Keshia Pollack and Andy Dannenberg are reviewing existing graduate level HIA courses to put together a model curriculum. So far, the institutions they identified that have HIA courses are: Indiana, Johns Hopkins, UC Berkeley, U Washington, Georgia Tech, U of Wisconsin, Portland State, and UVA. If you teach a HIA course, are thinking of starting one, or are at an institution incorrectly included on this list, please contact Keshia Pollack at kpollack@jhsph.edu by Friday, August, 23. Thanks!

Enjoy these waning days of summer, and looking forward to seeing many of you at the National HIA meeting in September!

Peace,

Allie, Casey, Celia, Holly A, Holly L, Jen, Jonathan, Jonathan SV, Kim, Lili, Marnie, and Sara
