iPad Travel Tips (3)

Hello Everyone,
Hope you had a great weekend.  In my last newsletter, I shared with you how my wife Carrie and I easily and privately shared (with family and friends) our recent Hawaii trip photos and movies by using email and Photo Stream.  In this edition, I want to share with you more tips on how we benefited from our mobile technology.   Read on...

As we traveled the Islands, I can't express how helpful and cool it was to have our iPhone and iPad with us. As you can imagine, traveling 11 hours to Hawaii and visiting three Islands, 3 rental cars, 3 hotels, and 6 total flights in 10 days can be a little challenging, so it was important that we were organized and resourceful to make our trip an enjoyable experience.

Quick summary of our mobile technology...

So you have a better idea of the mobile technology we brought along on our trip, here is a breakdown --
  • iPhone 5 - 16GB, iOS 6.0.x, Verizon 4G Data Plan (we had very good coverage with Verizon)
  • iPad 3 - 32GB, iOS 6.0.x, Verizon 4G Data Plan
  • Cannon PowerShot SX280 HS, 20x Optical Zoom with built-in WIFI and GPS Photo Coding (<-- only $260 on Amazon)

Travel Tip 3...Your camera does what?

As I mentioned in my previous newsletter, Hawaii had so many beautiful photo and movie opportunities.  Even though the built-in camera on my iPad and iPhone produce great looking photos, mobile device cameras still can't provide the feature set and functionality I needed to produce creative and memorable photos.  That said, just before our trip, I purchased the Cannon PowerShot SX 280 camera with 20x optical zoom and built-in WIFI.

The two major reason why I purchased this camera was for the 20x zoom feature (incredible clarity at this magnification) and the built-in WIFI feature.  I know...some of you are thinking, why would you want WIFI capabilities for your still camera?  The answer is simple, no usb cable, and no SD Flash memory card swapping.  Photo transferring is all done wirelessly!

I just loved the WIFI feature because I was able to transfer photos from the Cannon camera directly to my iPad and iPhone via a WIFI wireless connection (you can even upload directly to social media sites like Facebook).  No wires, no camera kit, no memory cards...no problem!

All I had to do is download a free Cannon app (Cannon CW - available in the App store) on each of my devices and connect to a WIFI network (I used the hotel WIFI to transfer pics to each device).  Now because I setup the Photo Stream feature in the Photos app (I discussed in last week's edition), I only had to wirelessly download the photos to one of my mobile devices.  Then My Photo Stream automatically updated photos to my other devices (including my Mac).  This is so cool because there was no need to physically transfer pictures to those devices.  How cool is that!

Plus, I was able to quickly update my private Shared Photo Stream, which allowed our family and friends to immediately view our most recent vacation photos.

Here's a photo of Carrie and me right before we enjoyed an amazing outdoor dinner while enjoying a breath-taking Hawaiian sunset.  Yes, it was very romantic!

If you'd like to enhance your photo experience with a dedicated camera, but don't want to worry about using cables or memory cards to transfer photos to your device(s), consider purchasing a camera that has built-in WIFI and supports the Apple iOS platform.

Next edition, I will share one more way that we leveraged our mobile devices on our trip to Hawaii.
