Welcome to September News

September News begins with the announcement that I'm adding massage therapy to the services I offer you. Many of you know that my "life before Feldenkrais" included sixteen years practicing and teaching massage therapy. I'm excited to be renewing my practice at New Seattle Massage with lots of wisdom gained while recovering from difficult injuries and the immersion of four years in Feldenkrais training.

New Seattle Massage is where I began my massage career 18 years ago. It is a massage cooperative, owned and operated by the practitioners who work there. We pool our resources for skilled administrative support and a beautifully equipped, well-maintained clinic. Together we can provide our clients with amenities (steam, sauna, showers, validated parking) that would be difficult to offer in an individual private practice. Check our website for the many discount programs available.

Feldenkrais and/or Massage?
Feldenkrais and massage have very different approaches for addressing your dynamic human body. Depending on your intention -- what you want and how you want to achieve it -- each method offers unique experience and potential. In a Feldenkrais lesson you are an active participant in a learning process for functional (how you move) improvement. During a massage you are generally a passive recipient of a therapeutic process for structural (how you are aligned) improvement. Each method contributes significantly to your health and well-being individually and in combination.

Which approach or combination is best for you?

Slow Movement With Awareness: How You Move Is As Important As How Much You Move
In last month's newsletter I wrote about the significance of Awareness, Attention and Inclusion for healthy movement. An article from Psychology Today gives voice to the broad health benefits of awareness and attention as an integral part of our physical lives. Below are some excerpts.

"There is mounting evidence that slow movement, with body sense awareness, has astounding health benefits by itself & in combination with regular exercise routines .... Slow methods (including yoga, tai chi, Feldenkrais) ... increase the parasympathetic relaxation response which in turn reduces the stress response, promotes immune function that inhibits inflammation and stimulates healing.

Body sense is medicine. It is nature's perfect blend of psyche and soma in which the practice of attention regulation promoted by slow movement practices combines with the body's readiness to direct its resources toward healing. It can only do that if we reduce stress, slow down, and pay attention."

"The unique thing about a massage from Helen is that it's done with Feldenkrais hands. . . they're educated ones that have a special sensitivity and understanding".
Lin R, Somatic Health Care Worker and avid social dancer

"Even as a bodyworker myself, I was surprised and impressed with how much change could occur in my body through the subtle movements of a session with Helen. She worked with me to explore my standing and sitting postures, which translated into lasting relief for discomfort I was having in my upper back and neck."
