Tech-Girl Monthly: Charlottesville Editon

Are you ready to celebrate?
Day of the Tech Girl is coming soon!
It's been almost a year since Tech-Girls first launched on October 11, 2012 - the first International Day of the Girl. The United Nations set this date aside to recognize that empowerment of and investment in girls is critical to our world right now.

Tech-Girls started with a shared google doc for brainstorming and a blog post! Then with a little help from social media tech, you made it even bigger and better! We've touched the lives of dozens of local girls and who knows how many more across the world!
"To me this first International Day of the Girl is planting a flag, taking stock of where we are and where we want to be. It is a milestone that we can look back on and measure progress. We know there are problems. We know there are alternate realities we want to be part of. It is time to move from advocacy to action - to show how to do the things that will empower girls. I am acting through Day of the Tech Girl and if tech is your thing too, I hope you will join in! If not tech, please find some way to empower and invest in girls so they can become the change we all need to see in the world!" ~ Kim Wilkens, 10/11/12
As we start a new year, we want to thank you for your support & make sure you know about all the cool events and activities coming up this Fall:
  • September 28 - Tech-Girls will be at the Founders Fair during Tomtoberfest. Come by, say hi and hack on our fruit & veggie keyboard! This is a great event to learn about the amazing things student groups, University departments, and other local ventures are creating right here in Charlottesville. Volunteers needed!
  • September 30 - TEDxCharlottesville Open Mic Night at the Jefferson Theater. Come hear community members including Tech-Girls founder, Kim Wilkens, give their best 2-minute TEDxCharlottesville talk for a chance to win a spot at the main event on November 30th. RSVP.
  • October 11 - Women in Tech Panel. Find out how tech sparked the interest of our panelists and their advice for the next generation. Space is limited, so be sure to RSVP.
  • October 12 - Mini-Maker Faire at Monticello High School. Join this amazing experience to get hands on with some really cool projects. Tech-Girls will be making and sharing Tapetricity cards and MaKey MaKey making. Volunteers needed!
  • October 15 & 17 - Tech-Girls Meetups resume in October. We've got lots of exciting projects coming up, starting with wearable electronics. Tech-Girls will meet at Computers4Kids weekly beginning October 15. At Western, Tech-Girls will meet the first and third Thursdays of the month beginning October 17 (11/7, 11/21, 12/5, 12/19). RSVP for Tech-Girls at Western.
  • October 24 - Tech Tour 2013. This is a great opportunity for Tech-Girls in 7th through 12th grade to check out the local tech scene. Follow-up with your school's tech specialist or career counselor to get signed up.
We need volunteers, mentors and role models. You do not need to be a tech expert to be involved. Come learn with the girls! Please complete this brief form if you are interested in helping out this Fall.
