Since the last edition I have:

 
  • continued my schedule of regular campaigning around Harrow East
  • led a well attended Westminster Hall debate on the plain packaging of tobacco products
  • attended the Battle of Britain Service at St John's Church in Stanmore
  • continued my programme of providing a Q&A session and a tour of Parliament for constituents through September
  • encouraged Harrow Council to sign up to the Royal British Legion's Community Covenant
  • continued my work on the Communities and Local Government Select Committee and the Backbench Business Committee
  • chaired a meeting of the APPG Justice for Equitable Life Policyholders
  • attended the Grand Opening of the new museum at Bentley Priory
  • addressed cancer survivors at the Relay for Life event in aid of Cancer Research UK
  • attended a Dementia Friends event at the request of constituents and support the work of the Alzheimer's Society
  • 'worn it pink' to raise awareness of the work of the Breast Cancer Campaign charity
  • joined in with the India Independence Day celebrations in Parliament
  • had meetings with colleagues, constituents and charity representatives to discuss the issues that matter to our area

Royal British Legion Community Covenant
 
I met with the Royal British Legion's new Legion Area Manager, Ryan Allain, to discuss the RBL Community Covenant. 

Harrow is one of only a handful of councils nationwide yet to sign up, so I wrote to the council and am pleased that there will now be a formal signing on Tuesday 17th September. 
Street Surgeries

I am continuing to visit as many parts of the constituency as possible in order to meet with local residents and find out more about the issues that are affecting our area. I have had a very positive response and have taken up all kinds of issues of behalf of constituents who might otherwise have never had the opportunity to raise their concerns with their local MP.
 
Relay for Life
 
I was honoured to join cancer survivors and fellow supporters for the Relay For Life 2013 event at the Bannister Stadium, held in aid of Cancer Research UK. 

The event was held to celebrate all of the efforts being made to help beat cancer and began with an inspiring Survivors' Lap of Honour.
 
Battle of Britain Service

I attended a service at St John's Church in Stanmore to pay tribute to the servicemen from our area who fought in the Battle of Britain.

The annual event is always a very poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our Armed Forces in the Second World War.
Equitable Life Update Meeting
 
I chaired a meeting of the APPG for Justice for Equitable Life Policyholders at which the Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Sajid Javid, provided an update to MPs on this issue. 
 
Matters arising included measures being taken to find policyholders whose whereabouts are currently unknown and issues regarding the current date the scheme is due to close.
Wear It Pink 2013

Sometimes, as an MP, you have to look a little silly in the name of a good cause. With that in mind, I 'wore it pink' to raise awareness of the Breast Cancer Campaign charity's annual fundraising day, which will fall on Friday 25th October this year.
 
Last year the event raised over £2.1 million to fund breast cancer research. To find out how to take part, please click here.
Bentley Priory Museum Opening
 
I was honoured to attend the Grand Opening of the new museum at Bentley Priory by HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cambridge.
 
The priory played a pivotal role in the Battle of Britain during the Second World War as the base from which the defence of the country was planned. Prince Charles unveiled a bust of Air Chief Marshal Hugh Dowding and the event was ended by a spectacular Hurricane and Spitfire fly-past.
 
Website of the Week - The Bentley Priory Battle of Britain Trust
Famous for its pivotal role as the Headquarters of Fighter Command during the Battle of Britain in 1940 a trust has been set up maintain Bentley Priory as a living memorial. It is now open for pre-booked group tours and will open for general visitors in the new year.
