Beneath Words: Practicing at the Boundary of Apprehension & Language
With Gregory Kramer
October 12 - 20, 2013 | Barre, MA
Meditators often fear language; it is seen as the enemy, as the garbage of a mind out of control. And yet they often spend much of their time in silent meditation lost in thoughts that take the form of inner speech. Occasionally, in deep retreat, when the mind calms down, wordless interludes may arise. They are treasured; relief at last; then, once again, the torrent of words. The battle goes on: silent sits that are not silent; a life lost in a hyper-verbal miasma. Meditation is undertaken as more of an attempt to get beyond defiling words than as a path to understanding and peace.… Continue reading →

Audio Teaching: speech is Action

This talk, offered by Gregory Kramer, considers speech as a world-forming action. In the Hindu and Abrahamic traditions, all things take birth in the Word. In the Buddhist tradition we have consciousness taking rise based upon volitional formations. Action, perception, and wisdom are explored as they relate to language. Testimonial

Insight dialogue, on retreat or on-line using skype, has made the dharma come alive, in my experience, again and again. It is this relational practice, with support of the ID guidelines, that has illuminated for me, the deepest hungers and offered many moments of ease and letting go of suffering. I remember saying to a teacher once, after many years of solo and silent meditation only, that "it is so much harder to remain present in relationship." ID has shown me something surprising and wonderful, that relational meditation practice, and relationship, can energize the unfolding of wisdom, compassion, and awakening. - Susan Clarion
