Monroe Drive /Cumberland Road Crosswalk
I am pleased to share with you that I am partnering with the Kendeda Fund and the Atlanta Department of Public Works (DPW) to fund the construction of an enhanced pedestrian crosswalk over Monroe Drive into the new northeastern entrance to Piedmont Park.  The project will feature a high-intensity actuated crosswalk (HAWK) beacon, which provides a red light to stop traffic for pedestrians as needed and has been deemed the safest and most appropriate option for this location.

Legislation I introduced to apply District 6 carry-forward funds to supplement the Kendeda Fund's and DPW's contributions to this project is currently moving through Council, and I anticipate this will be approved in the next cycle (adoption by Full Council on October 7).  I am awaiting word from the Public Works Commissioner as to the specific installation schedule once the funding is in place, and I have requested that this be given high priority particularly because of the volume of people that have been accessing the expanded section of Piedmont Park.

I look forward to the successful completion of this project that will ensure the safety of those that access the wonderful expansion of Piedmont Park from this area.

Music Midtown Impact on Piedmont Park

Our office has received numerous calls and emails regarding the impact of Music Midtown on Piedmont Park.  The event's large crowds mixed with the rainy conditions a week ago Saturday, have had an obvious effect on portions of the Meadow and Oak Hill.  I too have been devastated to see the damaged condition of the park, and I have received many complaints about the noise levels from the festival.

Please know that I have been in conversations with the Piedmont Park Conservancy and the City Parks Department. My immediate priority is to ensure that all parties work closely with organizers of the two upcoming important community events - Atlanta Pride and Atlanta AIDS Walk -- and enable them to be as successful as possible while we continue to restore and protect the park.

Please also know that once we get past those two events, I remain committed to keeping a critical dialog open between the City, the Conservancy, Music Midtown organizers and the community to make sure we fully address how to best accommodate all interests going forward.  Piedmont Park is an asset that everyone should be able to enjoy, including the adjacent neighborhoods, and clearly some adjustments need to be made.

I welcome your thoughts and suggestions on this matter to better inform me as these conversations continue.

Atlanta Streets Alive This Sunday!
City Council District 6 welcomes Atlanta Streets Alive this Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Atlanta Streets Alive This Sunday, October 6, 2013

The vision of Atlanta Streets Alive is to encourage Atlanta to develop living streets -- streets that appeal to pedestrians, bikers, businesses and neighbors.  Streets are publicly-owned assets but on most days are used mainly by cars.  On this day, people can regain ownership of the streets they pay taxes to build and maintain -- and transform them into crazy fun healthy, living streets for all to enjoy.

Run For Good 5K on Sunday, November 3rd

This inaugural run is slated for Sunday, November 3, 2013 and is run entirely in Piedmont Park.  100% of the proceeds will benefit the Piedmont Park Conservancy.  The race is hosted by Boot Camp 4a Cause.  Click the logo below to register.
