2014 Plays and Schedules Announced

Pinewood Players has announced plays and schedules for the 2014 season.

The season will kick off with "Blithe Spirit," a comedy written by Noel Coward and directed by Doug Pusateri. This very funny play is about a writer who invites a Medium to his house for a seance in order to do research for a story he is writing. The Medium accidentally contacts the writer's deceased wife Elvira, whose spirit then takes up residence in his home. The dialog is witty and clever as he responds aloud to Elvira's snide remarks but his current wife, Ruth thinks he is speaking to her. Mayhem breaks out when Elvira attempts to murder the writer, but instead kills Ruth, who then also returns as a ghost. Laughter abounds as the writer attempts to free himself and his home of these unwanted spirits.  Play dates for "Blithe Spirit" will be June 13, 14, 15, 20, 21 and 22.

The second production will be "The Gazebo" written by Alex Coppel and directed by Frank Hess. This comedy is about a TV mystery writer who dreams up near perfect crimes each week for his TV show. In an ironic twist, he is blackmailed and faced with the prospect of committing a real perfect murder to protect his wife's reputation, but  suffice it to say that his attempt at the real thing is less perfect than those he writes for TV. He decides to plant the body of the blackmailer he believes he has killed in a fresh concrete foundation just poured for a gazebo that his wife recently purchased at auction. In the meantime, the blackmailer he believes he has killed is found shot dead in his own apartment along with a list of people he had been blackmailing, including the writer. Soon the writer's house is crawling with detectives, one of which is his best friend, the assistant D.A. This all makes for a hilarious comedy which takes an interesting twist at the end. The play will open on August 1 and run August 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10.

The season finale will be "Cactus Flower," (stage play by Abe Burrows, play by Pierre Baillet and Samuel French) a poignant comedy directed by Don Miller. The storyline involves Julian Winston, a dentist who is involved in a  relationship with a younger woman (Toni Simmons).  In order to keep her at arm’s length he tells her he is married with three children.  When she concludes that their future together is going nowhere she unsuccessfully attempts suicide.  Deciding he is really in love with Toni, Julian tells her that his wife wants a divorce anyway so he will divorce and marry Toni.  Toni’s sense of being honest and above-board drives her to demand to meet Julian’s wife.  Julian convinces his long-time office assistant, Miss Dickinson, to pose as his wife.  When the two women meet, further complications develop, including the need to come up with a lover for Julian’s “wife”, a young male neighbor of Toni’s, various patients of Julian’s, etc.  One lie leads to another and very funny complications develop.  Miss Dickinson also “blooms” as she learns there is more to life than taking care of Dr. Winston. The play is scheduled to run August 22, 23, 24 and August 28, 29 and 30.

Theater Seating Upgrade Project in Progress
No sooner had the curtain come down on the final 2013 performance than construction began at the Pinewood Playhouse. Old seats were removed, new seats are being modified and fitted to the theater layout. New carpeting and safety step lighting will also be installed. The old seats were donated to a church in Agua Prieta, Mexico, just across the border from Douglas. The congregation there had been trying to gather any kind of seating available including old folding chairs to seat the worshipers. The beloved blue seats will now reside in the Divino Salvador (Christian) Church in Agua Prieta and we hope the congregation will receive as much pleasure from the use of these seats in the future as Pinewood Players has over the past years.  Photo  below shows the work in progress at the Pinewood Playhouse. We can't wait to enjoy the new seating and amenities!

Cabaret Players Celebrate Inaugural Season Success
The combined casts of the Cabaret Nights Reader's Theater performances celebrated their first season and four sell out performances with a cast party held in the Pinewood Country Club Showroom on Friday, September 6.  The casts and directors of Gin and Tonic, Chatterton Country Club, Burns and Allen Meet Sam Spade, The Challenge of Bureaucracy, Wanda's Visit, Fortune Cookie and Abbott & Costello's "Who's on First"  along with all the volunteers who helped make the productions possible celebrated in style as they entered the Showroom on a Red Carpet Runway and donned "Blues Brothers" sunglasses while posing for photos. Doug Pusateri, originator and producer of the Cabaret Nights Readers Theatre concept for Munds Park and Director of several of the plays, was in high spirits and rare form as he MC'd the event and thanked the casts, directors and volunteers for a successful inaugural season. Cabaret Nights was the collaboration of Pinewood Players and the Pinewood Country Club to present a unique Reader's Theatre concept to the community. The Showroom at the Pinewood Country Club was configured in tables of four in an intimate "Cabaret Style" setting featuring unique table decorations and a cash bar which was open prior to the performances and during intermissions.  The performances were open to the public and were sold out for all four of the initial season performances. All proceeds from ticket sales for the Cabaret Nights in 2013 were donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. The photo below shows the revelers in their finest hour! Cabaret Nights Reader's Theatre will rreturn to the Pinewood Country Club for the 2014 season. Watch for the announcement of plays and schedules in future editions of the Pinewood Players Newsletter.
